Short box vs 8 foot box

Us 8-footers need to start a club or something :)

Extended cab and 8'1" dually bed here. Fits in the 2 car garage in Ohio also, barely. Reese hitch has to be removed from the receiver to allow the door to close though.

But then, I guess I'm not a Brentwood boy. Darn!

I'm not in the OJ Brentwood, I'm in a little town up north on the Delta, out in the dirt.

Ford made an 8 ft bed with a small door and extra room behind the seat for a few years on the F-150. I've got an 05 and have found it very good as a work truck. Tools and stuff go behind the seat and are easily accessible from the small door. You still have the 8ft. bed and yet the truck isn't 20 miles long. I wish they still made it but I guess it wasn't popular. Most people were using a truck to haul small children and groceries in the back seat and an occasional cardboard box in the bed. Look - I got a truck - I'm cool too!

Built a house with a 6.5' bed...There were a few times I wish that I had 8'...most of the time not. Haven't had an 8' bed truck for 15 years and don't miss it.

I wouldn't even own a truck if I didn't have to have it for work, hauling staging, tools, plywood, 16 ft planks, etc. I think driving a truck around town is ridiculous otherwise.

yes, I do have an opinion on that.;)

I think some of you are overlooking the family economics in truck selection.

Around here, a 4x4 truck of any length or # of doors is a nice way to get you where you need to go in the winter.

If you want to trailer a boat, camper, etc. a truck with short bed is fine. If it has a CC, then the kids and dog go along no sweat. Still room for toys, food, grills, etc. in the short bed.

With a crew cab, your groceries come home in the cab easily, unless you go to the store alone, that isn't likely with a reg. cab. An open bed is not the handiest thing to travel with. Ever stop at a rest area and wonder if your stuff will all be there when you come out?

You can haul a fair amount of trash, diesel&gas cans, gardening supplies, and whatever else you wouldn't want inside an SUV, in a short bed truck.

You can easily haul 4x8 plywood and 10' long boards with the tailgate down. I just brought home 20 8' long PT deck boards and a sheet of OSB in my Sport Trac with a 4' bed for gosh sakes. How often do you buy enough lumber to load up a full size pickup? Get it delivered, it's cheaper than owning any truck :)

I see the CC short beds as a replacement for station wagons, only better. I don't think people buy them just to say they have a truck. They are pretty good all-purpose vehicles for a family. What other vehicle can cover so many bases reasonably well? That's exactly why reg. cabs with an 8' bed are fairly scarce.
Dave.

I have had my first crew cab truck for almost a year and there is nothing better in that I can take the family and still haul stuff. As long as there are kids in the house (which will be a while since we have another on the way) I will sacrifice some bed to be able to safely and comfortably transport the family. Yes there are times that an 8' bed would be nice but for those times I can hook up a trailer.

I prefer the 6-1/2' bed on my 2001 Chevy 2500 HD, 6L. Chief likes the back seat for himself! I keep the bed covered & can lock the tailgate. If I want to haul anything that won't fit, that's why I have three different sized flatbed trailers!

I no longer tow heavy enough to really need a 3/4 ton, but getting along fine with what I have (160,000 miles). I bought it with around 35,000, I'd just as soon somebody else wears off the "new price"!

I don't, however like the 5-1/2' beds on the newer 1/2 tons! ~~ grnspot110

I think I've owned every combination except a full crew cab with 8' bed. That's probably what I've have if it would fit in the garage. The long bed is nice if you have a tool box mounted, so you still have some bed left with it in. I had to cut a large Weatherguard box to make it fit in a crew cab 1/2 ton w/ 5 1/2' foot bed. A fiberglass top works better with the short beds IMHO., but to each his own.
