Short term Fuel starvation after changing Fuel filter

Mine comes out of my fuel transfer tank which has a filter.

On my 2010 —2305. I have changed the filter every 100 hours ( 800 total now). When I put the new filter on, I don’t tighten the ring. Turn fuel valve on till bowl is full and starts to come out at top, tighten ring. It starts right up, but does stall and surge for maybe 10 seconds then goes to idle. ( never dies). I’ve done this since new.
With that said, as a new owner and overly proud. I changed the filter this way every 50 hours first couple hundred hours.
Might try that way next time.
