Shortened ROPS - WHY???

false security, and just another large metal thing to crush or pin you if you aren't held in the seat.

I just added a rops to my 35 year old ford tractor.. with drivers ont he road texting and not paying attention.. it makes me feel better.

you mean added a rops to the ford 8000 ya have? i considered doing to my ford 8000 but was a bit pricey, and i know some will say ya cant put a price on safety etc, but anyhow what did it cost ya if ya dont mind me asking? new or used was it?

Actually i put them on my 5000. got a used set from the local auction. cost 159$ plus a couple weekends of sweat equity. came with a nice big aluminum topper and some serviceable flat top fenders.

First off, Safety police, Dont Scold me....I've got a cabbed machine so my rops is permanent

But riddle me this....
Foldable Rops...if a person has to fold the rops to get it in the garage and NEVER unfolds it because its a PITA...whats safer....shortening the rops so it fits in your garage at the new "max upright height" or just keeping the rops folded down?

Yeah, keeping it factory is best..but I KNOW this is s scenario that is VERY true. I know in my travels I see it all the time..IMO cutting down the ROPS to a height that fits in your garage so you can keep it up is better then nothing.

Is there any statistic that shows that 8' garage doors became more popular with the increase in smaller "homeowner" tractors with ROPS?

I think If I was building ( not buying ).. I'd make my garage door rops compatible.. can't add too much to the construction phase.. vs the utility and safety it will offer down the line.

I would say they came with soccer moms driving SUVs.

As for the other question about seatbelts. I ALWAYS wear mine. It's easy enough to do. First thing I do when I sit down.

It really depends on how good a welder the guy is...

Although folding and erecting the ROPS is a bit of a pain, I don't operate my tractor without erecting the ROPS. Part of the job...

That said, I'd rather have a modified (shorter) ROPS then run with a folded ROPS.If I was to modify a ROPS, I'd find some square thickwalled tubing that would fit inside the ROPS tubing, bolt that to the lower and upper sections of the ROPS, then weld the sections complete (BTW, bevel the sawn ends to get a good, full penetration weld).

actually, it's probably quite a bit of an extra cost. 7' doors are/were the standard, mainly because an 8' wall is the standard. if you have a rops that requires more height, you have no choice but to go with a higher door, and that will always require a higher wall. you'll have to go to 10' studs and then cut to the length you want. more expensive studs, more sheathing, more siding, more vapor barrier... basically everything you used will need 10%-25% more material - oh yeah. more labor too.

if you had thought ahead to have higher ceilings, but still used 7' doors, i just gotta ask... what were you thinking? :D
