Some of our neighbors had a little dog that they kept penned up in their utility room. I always felt sorry for it. The poor thing has spent it's entire life in a three foot by eight foot room. The only time it got outside was twice a day for bathroom breaks. It was about twelve years old.

Anyway the neighbor who is also my wife's cousin told me last fall that the dog was sick and I told her I would take care of it for her. All she had to do was leave with the doors unlocked and I would make it quick and painless. She diddle daddled around for six months but finally texted me last Saturday. Said they were four hours away, wouldn't be home til 10:00 Sunday night, the dog was so sick it couldn't walk, could I take care of it, but she didn't want to know anything about it. So Sunday afternoon I went over and put in in a coon trap, It had some kind of huge tumor growing out it's backside and I used my boot to push it into the trap, didn't want to touch it with my hands. Drove a few miles to a farm of ours that has a buzzard roost on the back side and dumped the poor critter on the ground. By this time I am pretty pi$$ed off that they had let the dog suffer as long as they had. It couldn't even stand up to run off. Was tempted to put a blindfold on it and a cigarrette in it's mouth and take a picture and text it to them but I didn't. I used my little LCP 380 and put her down.

If you have an animal that is sick please don't let it suffer. Put it down and out of it's pain. This little critter never hurt anybody and was happy with any attention it ever got. I do not hunt any more. I don't kill anything that isn't making a nuisance of itself (such as the neighborhood squirrel population). But in a case like this I did the only thing I could do and I did it quickly and as painless as possible.

Oh yeah, the little dog was about 15 inches long and the Hornady Critical Defense 380 went thru the skull and penetrated the lenght of the dog and came out it's rear.

Sad......too bad your neighbors are such idiots and so cruel. No animal should suffer to that extent.....sounds like these people are totally irresponsible....you can only hope their last days are equally painful.

Well this story reminded me of my having to put my cat down last fall. As soon as we discovered he was suffering, I did the deed the same day. I did not like it one bit, I thought a lot of the cat, and it was a very difficult thing for me to do. I have killed my share of game animals and nuisance animals but this was the hardest shot I have ever made. It makes me sad even now to think about it as I write this. I put the shovel on the Kioti, and dug him a nice deep grave and we carefully laid him to rest in it. It was a darn sad day let me tell you. But both you and I have had to take care of animals and relieve their suffering, I guess we have something in common.

That was a 22 Short task it sounded like. Never understood people who would not put an animal down in a timely manner.

Sounded like you cared until you had to make it a point to describe this part. Was that part really called for in your explanation

RSKY, I feel your pain. I had a pet Raccoon for 15 years,, loved to watch Baseball and got really sick so I called the vet.

I hate that bud. Animal husbandry is more than buying chew toys and petting. It's sad when folks don't care enough to do what's responsible. I have put a many out of their misery, letting them suffer is unacceptable.

Other methods are available as well as the exhaust into a box or if ya have CO tank same method, best to take it to vet if they are close but there are times the gun is the only choice.

my brother had to put down my moms dog same way (he was lasaopsa & had gotten hit, was about half run over) only the 380 round bounced off the dogs head & popped out his eyes not killing him. He had to take 2 more shots to finish dog off & was tore up for days about it... Almost same one of my old bosses backed over back half of one of his puppies and had to put it down taking multiple shots as the poor thing tried to hide when it was hit to get away & he had not clear shot up under some pines.

last resort for me is to use gun for pet to be put down but shot one dog myself. NOT something I ever want to have to do again & I fully agree about people holding onto their pets too long making them suffer. We took our Lab/Doberman mix to vet about 7 years ago & still miss her even though we got a Lab/Husky mix now almost 5 yrs old. He is really something vs most dogs overly smart and total mommy & daddy player. better at pitting/playing us against each other than the teenage girls were! lol

Here's my NEW BOO I think in this pic he is thinking last picture and then I'm going psycho!
