If you have an animal that is sick please don't let it suffer. Put it down and out of it's pain.

Been there myself, many years ago. A dog had been hit by a car and it was very obvious that the dog would not live long because it's lower half was... nevermind. Being the only one who had a gun and the courage to do what needed to be done, I took action. It haunts me to this very day, but I don't regret doing it... not for a second.

In Oregon they would charge you with animal cruelty. But the people who run the state are nuts. Supposed to take the critter to a vet, I guess.

Don't try to put down an animal with car exhaust. Cars run so clean these days it doesn't work very well. When is the last time you heard of someone committing suicide that way? Been a very long time I'll bet. Used to be fairly common.

Sounded like you cared until you had to make it a point to describe this part. Was that part really called for in your explanation

Ditto. I think the entire post is inappropriate. :(

I take my pets when the time is right to the vet to be put down and will be there with them. Seems to be very quick and painless for the animal. I have guns but don't hunt anymore, I am around deer all the time and never had one call me any names.

My dogs are more important to me than any person I can think of and I dispise cruelty to animals such as referenced above on the part of the owners.

My vet does the service free of charge. More should. Better than shooting a loyal family pet.

Tractor exhaust on the other hand... My brother once used Dad's Massey (Industrial 35 IIRC, had a 50HP Perkins Diesel), some hose and a tarp to kill a skunk that he caught in a borrowed live trap (the skunk was going into the chicken coop and stealing eggs and he didn't want to shoot the skunk in the borrowed trap IIRC)

I agree, free or at least just the cost of the supplies used.

It is terribly difficult for some people to make that final decision for a pet. I know my parents waited way too long for their beloved dog.

As for vet vs doing it yourself, we had the vet put down a horse. Never again. The poor girl ran off 50 feet and stood there in pain, shuddering for a moment before she finally went down. I still hurt for her. Never again. I've put down dogs and horses very quickly and apparently with a lot less pain (if any) than the vet. Even the UC Davis vet school site suggests that a gun shot is at least as good as injections (and they show the proper technique.)
