Shotgun Myths and long range shotgun sniping!

After all the shooting that Ive done over the years, I must say that I've never seen shots with a slug gun out to 230 yards. First off, I'm impressed with the shooters ability to keep his rounds inside what, 18 inches at 230 yards with SLUGS. Frankly the long range shooting done with 50bmg is all well fine and good when hunting zombies in Zombie-stan...but try whacking zombies at 200 yards plus with a slug gun. As Clint once said - ya gotta know your limitations...

Anyone played with "bolo" shells ?

Nope..It would be interesting, but I think they would be a short range proposition.

The new rifle barreled shotguns that shoot sabot slugs with a "modern" polymer tipped bullets are actually quite accurate. I had a Savage 220F for 1 season, but I gave it up because of the price of the ammo ($3+ per shell). I did take 4 deer with it, one being a doe at 170 yards and it was a perfect double lung shot with no meat loss. The second was a buck on which I only had a frontal shot at what turned out to be 125 yards (initially got the wrong range from a new Nikon Monarch rangefinder). That buck was shot in the head right behind the ear.

The gunwerks guys make a $4000 muzzle loader that they shoot out to 400 and 600+ yards, but it is a bit rich for my taste...

I agree that a smoothbore shotgun with slugs at 200+ yards is an act of desperation... Now with any of my other centerfire rifles 300+ yards is just getting started.. This last Sat morning a friend and I were shooting at a 12x12 steel target at 320 yards with a gusting crosswind from 5 to 13mph+ and he shot a nice 2.5" group with his 6.5x47 Lapua and I shot a 3.5" wide by 1/2" high group with my 308. Even the 175 Sierra Match king is no match for the 139gr 6.5mm bullets, especially when the wind is blowing...

In southern Michigan it,s shotgun only for deer season.I bought a savage 220f 20 ga.bolt gun.I shoot 3 inch barnes expanders or Remington accu-tip sabots. They are tack drivers out to 175-200 yards.I am highly impressed how far slug guns have come in the last 10 years.

Anyone played with "bolo" shells ?

No not me but I remember 25 years + ago I saw some 12 gauge rounds "law enforcement types" had.The best way I can describe them was a slug shaped like an hour glass. Like two triangles put together with points joining. I was told they were made for blowing or tearing down house doors espiecially wood. In theory the would tumble in flight. I fired one once at some "wood" and it did a lot of short range damage. I used to call them "tumblers" don't know if that was/is proper name.

Heres a shotgun I've had my eyes on lately. They run a little less than a grand.

Yes a local gunshop in town had a raffle about almost two years ago. The grandprize was a KSG. I got to hold it in my hands. With all due respect to anyone that owns one I was not impressed. Nor am I a firearms expert , but the plastic part of it looked/felt like to me if dropped wrong it could/would crack. I have never fired one. Nor do I have a dog in the shotgun/firearms race but just giving you my first thoughts on it from handling it.

I could see slugs from a rifled barrel being accurate over distance. Slow, and with a big arc getting there.

But, a slug from a 12g is not too much different from the conical bullets for black powder rifes, or the big black powder catridges. Think a .050 Maxi Ball, or something like the 45-90, 45-120, 60-90. Those are, at a basic level, similar speeds with a long heavy bullet. All of those have exhibited excellent accuracy over long distance.

In the past, I shot some nice groups from a Hawken with FF powder and a 0.50 Maxi Ball at 200 yards. That rifle did have peep sights installed.

I shot a few of them a long time ago...have not seem them lately...
I know a couple of guys that used to use them to clear shooting lanes through the palmettos in FL where they were hog hunting...

Used to see the bolo rounds along with fleshette and incendiary shells...they may have been outlawed ?
