Dick, I'm wondering how you were placing your feet on the HST "rocker". Nobody that I know uses it like a rocker on the 1533/38. You put your foot beside the pedal with your heal on the floorboard and press the pedal like a gas pedal. The pedal is shaped like an upside down hockey stick. I can see if you put your foot fully on the long part of the pedal and tried to operate that way, it would not be comfortable. I think your vehement dislike of this pedal arrangement could be cured with a little fancy footwork. :)

That's exactly what I did and my leg was cramping up in no time. Why didn't they just put two pedals down there instead of the rocker if that's how it was intended to be used. No biggie, I like the shuttle just fine and have very little back and forth work which seems to be about the only real value of an HST setup over the shuttle anyway. In fact about half of my run time is going nowhere and I'm sitting backwards running the backhoe so in that case it doesn't matter which setup you have. As a retired engineer I also find that simpler usually works out to be better.

When working my backhoe, I carry a 3ft stick with me so I can turn a little, and press the stick down on the go pedal to move the machine back a little to continue digging.

Try that with a shuttle. :)

I've still not found any reason to have anything but an HST.

And most SCUT/Cut buyers agree with you. That's why the vast majority of inventory on dealer's lots have HSTs. It's like trying to buy a new car or pickup with a standard transmission, or a standard cab pickup. Still doesn't mean it's the right choice for everyone. I didn't want an HST for myself, but recommend them for most people. If I outlive my current tractor, I may search until I find a HST model I like. Heck, by then there may be something even better. For now, I got what I wanted and I am very pleased with it.

John Deere did. I don't see much difference if that is a better more comfortable way to use the treadle rocker pedal. But if used that way I can see the location would totally suck vs. the other brands beside each other approach.

I just use the stick to push the hoe where I want it... NO big deal at all...

As for a good reason to NOT buy a hydrostat, I NEVER have to listen to that dammm extremely annoying hydro whine!!

With my shuttle, I just stick the backhoe in the ground , shove the tractor ahead, set it down and dig some more.

Mahindra has a two pedal setup on the lower end 2500 series TYM made machines but a rocker setup on the higher end 1500 series Misui built machines. Don't know why but it is what it is. I wanted a 1500 series so I opted for the shuttle which I liked driving better than the rocker as soon as I got on it. I had to wait an extra week or two to get it but that was OK as long as I got what I wanted. I think I could have gotten anything I wanted because west coast distribution is right down the road and is if anything closer than the dealership. I had to go there to test drive the shuttle since the dealer only had HSTs on the lot but no two pedals. There are lots and lots of red tractors over there. Maybe one of these days they'll update the satellite images of the Olivehurst Airport so everyone can see the sea of pretty red tractors.
