Should I buy a Bx 2230?

Alfonzo, At first I thought a BX1500 would be OK for you but after reading more of your posts I think you should consider one of the three cylinder machines (1830 or 2230). I stand by my comment that the 1500 can do a lot of jobs but you may need a little more power.

I put 4 hrs on my machine yesterday dethatching sweeping and aerating my lawn but I won't mow it till next week so I still can't say how my setup will perform for mowing. As far as how much hp is needed for cutting grass I never take more than the top third off the grass at a time so I could probably run the 48 inch deck with as little as 10 hp. Deck size and length and condition of the grass you will be cutting (wet or dry) should be considered when deciding how much power you need.

Have you compared the Bx2230 to the Cub Cadet 5200 series tractors? Check out the specs and compare prices, you might be surprised. They offer both gas and diesel engines. The gas are rated at 25HP and the diesel at 23HP.

You need the 2230 with 60 inch MMM, maybe a 60 drag behind might do. You need the loader for mucking out your stalls since you say you have horses etc. Must you sell the Farmall /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif? Anyway, get the 2310 with loader and 60 MMM and maybe a KK 48 inch XB brushcutter (light duty but sufficient for the small stuff and grass/hay/weeds). You will need a snow blower for the drive or a blade. I suggest you get the ag tires, they are decent on lawns--really /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif and more traction in snow etc. Good luck. A year ago I moved from a Kubota B7100(16hp) to a B2400(24hp). The increase in horsepower is noticeable especially when mowing heavy grass and in the operation of some 3pt accessories. Since both BX's are roughly the same size, I would strongly consider the BX2230. The 60"MMM on the 2230 would certainly be more maneuverable than the 60" on your A.

I ordered the BX2230 with 60" deck, FEL, and a five foot scraper blade. They say they'll deliver it Friday or Saturday.

Thanks everybody for the good advice. I was particularly tempted by the power-trac suggestion. They look like nice machines that would serve my purpose at about half the price.

In the end, I'm just a little scared of dealing with such small company without a big support network in place. Buying my tractor by making checks on a tick sheet also seems scary, and I'm worried about resale value.

I know that if I'm making a mistake on the BX2230, it should hold it's value pretty decently after the initial depreciation. Compact tractors with FELS, 4 wheel drive, power steering, and a dependable diesel go pretty quickly in the aftermarket. What few tractors I found that fit the bill in the used market were running 7-8k even more than ten years old.

Now I can sell my pickup truck, buy a trailer and my life should be simplified. It'll be nice to have modern reliable equiptment. Frankly, after ten years of tinkering with somebody else's hand me downs, it will be nice to have a tractor I can screw up all by myself!
