What a strange problem! I thought dealing with wetlands in Florida was bad. The only thing I learned is that things are protected from individuals not big business with deep pockets. I was given the run around when trying to put a 100 foot road alongside wetlands, then I watch a builder clear 50 acres of wetlands. He just paid for the permit! Big price!

Overall, nothing is really protected. The term was created by the government to generate revenue.

I too don't believe asking the government since it could be inviting trouble. Red tape, paperwork, legal fees, and permitting costs. All to find out there was never a problem in the first place, but you spent 5K to make sure!

I like the idea of calling the univeristy since it provides education and little or no cost to the owner. Sometimes, you can ask one of the local professors for a professional opinion, and at least be a little more informed.

Good luck,

Joe

I agree with Eddie....to a point. If you are going to make the decision to get rid of it, then think about digging the "site" with the loader and placing it somewhere as "fill". This way 99% of whatever is in there can be recovered if necessary by somebody else (maybe University). You simply put the material in X place because you felt you might need it for some another project....that's all you know. There may be artifacts in there that are important and it would be a shame to just scatter them about or bury them without the possibilty of recovery. There will be no going back for anybody, but the mass is still recoverable in a different location and can be picked through and sort if necessary.

My neighbors son owned a house with a large "Indian mound". Much larger then what you have pictured. I would say it was 40-50 feet tall. He lived in the house in front of the mound for a few years till his grape vine business took off. So when he wanted to build a new house he had to remove the mound. SUNY Fredonia did some research on the mound and such and found there was nothing really noteworth about the area and I almost think they did say it wasn't even an actual Indian mound. Just a big mound of dirt. So it was leveled and a house is built adjacent to where the mound was.

If it was an actual Indian mound I don't know what would have happened. Good luck to you though.

Me personnally, I would work around it. Maybe put some bushes or trees around and make it look nice. Kinda like a focal point that actually has some history to it. Do the right thing and think with your heart not your tractor.

( Before I notified any type of official type agency, and especially a University, I'd research into the pro's and con's of makeing something like that public knowledge. They might be a dime a doze in your area and not contain a singal artifact, but if there is something there, you could be in for a huge nightmare.

Never, ever, ever let the government in on anything your up to unless your willing to deal with the worse case scenario.

If you want it gone, do it quickly and quietly. If anybody asks, you don't know anything about it, never seen it or even know that Indians were in your area. It worked for OJ, deny, deny, deny!!!!!!!

Good luck,
Eddie

I've found that more one can limit any involvement with government officials (federal, state, and local) and the machinery of government in general, the better off one usually is.

Government is a necessary evil ..... just remember the operative word there is "evil" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
