Should I pre-soak my corn seed?

Fishman you could also do like the Indians did eons ago and place a dead fish under each kernel for an outstanding corn crop. I'll bet you wouldn't have any problems locating the fish. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Part two,,,,now after you plant your corn as I said,[I make furrows with hoe edge corner, wide enough so's I can get rototiller inbetween rows],[I also forgot to say,,,,I plant 3-4 kernals a small step apart, foot or so in the furrows,,you thin it out to about 3 per hill,[I'll use that word hill now cause we are getting ready to about do it],wait till its about 6 inches or so and ground damp,,,[if you plant much corn,,its hard to get just 3 kernals per spot,,so's its easier to just do your best and than thin],,,,,,then when its about 12 inches tall,,its time to till between rows and hoe it,,they way I hoe it is,,,just go on one side of row,,and rake up loose dirt on oppisite side onto corn,,gently,,,put enough between hills and on side of corn to cover up weeds thus, killing most weeds,,than do the other side,,,when you get done with a row,,you have made a hill, all the way down row,,if you time it right,,you only need to hoe once,,might need to till between rows again when its about waist high,,,don't get to close to corn when tilling,,always make your rows about 1 1/2 times as far apart as your tiller,,,,that about covers it I think,,,thingy

Chuck, I've not used the PVC and stick, but one year the crows dug up and ate every kernel of corn, so I replanted. Crows came back and got about half of the corn before I shot one and hung him on the fence and that seemed to deter them. As soon as the corn sprouted, I saw that I had about half what I wanted. The prior owner of my place had left several long aluminum arrows in the shop building with no arrow heads or tips on them (at least I think they were arrows). I found a small bolt with one of those slightly cupped hex heads that would screw into the end of an arrow, so I used that as you used your stick; just dropped kernels of corn where I wanted them, pushed them around with the bolt on the arrow if they didn't land exactly right, then pushed them down into the dirt about an inch. It worked great and I had a nice crop that year.

Thingy, I know you're new to Tractorbynet, so you probably haven't seen a post I made long ago of what I was told as a kid, growing up in Oklahoma, that was the way the Indians planted corn, and that was 5 kernels per "hill":

One for the worm,
One for the crow,
One to rot, and
Two to grow. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

We wait for the sweet corn to reach 6 inches in height, we then cultivate, thin if necessary, and broadcast clover seed between the small corn plants. As the clover matures it fixes nitrogen in the ground that the corn uses while it matures. It also gets so thick that weeds don't have much of a chance to get established so it's a win/win scenario.

This works best naturally for smaller garden plots, not fields of corn, and it is important to let the corn get established first (minimum height 6") or the clover will overtake the corn plants.

Westonium,

There is a sweetcorn variety called "Incredible" in our area. It's the best IMO. In the past we've planted both golden and silver queen and Kandy corn.

In one of the other threads someone mentioned planting his corn in an ice cube. Yep he would freeze it in an ice cube and then plant the cube. Instant moisture?? Man that must of took a long time to freeze each of them kernels.
