Should I use a hammer here?

I removed the backhoe from my Kubota tractor and there is this one little piece left (on the shaft, it was right before the backhoe pump) that I don't know how to get off - please see the picture.

Should I put a pin into that hole and hammer it out? I tried (gently so far), but it didn't move. More power, better tool or is there a trick to it?

Did you release the shaft by loosening the bolts? That's not the normal way to remove that part. The spring-loaded pin closest to the tractor is pressed in and the whole unit is pulled off the splined shaft. If it is not releasing try a rust release, lube or heat application.
A hammer should not be needed and could possibly damage your spline stub.

That looks like it's been on there a long time. If it is just rusted on, a small about of heat and a pry bar should do the trick. Don't heat to much or you could do damage to the seal on the tractor. Sometimes the splines in those keyed couplers begin to wear and actually get jammed on the pto splines. If this happens they become really hard to remove. I have actually had to cut them off with a grinder before. Tractor Supply carries alot of different sizes if you need to go that route, and they are not very expensive. When you put that coupler back on coat the inside of the coupler and the pto shaft with grease or neverseze...makes it a bit messy but really helps the next time you want to remove it.

After a good soak and some heat a few light taps may be required on the part of the pin sticking out as you tapped it a few times from the other side which may have jammed it.

You may also want to try and move the coupling forward and backward on the shaft. Be very gentle when doing this.:D

For some reason hammer and gentle don't work out too well :)

DO NOT put a punch in the hole. You need to spray the whole thing with penetrating oil, even in the hole. Then -TAP-- on the round piece sticking up on the other side of the hole with a hammer.
When that piece sticking up goes in it has a notch in it that will let the whole piece come off the shaft.
If the piece is still stuck I would RATTLE it with a air chisel with a FLAT punch in it. I get a lot of things loose with the vibration from an air chisel.

I agree that you need to push the larger pin all the way in.

Soak it in good penetrating oil for a while.

I would first try to put a pipe wrench(strap type) and work it in the opposite rotation then in the normal rotation rapidly in a jarring fashion. then try to pull it off.

If this failed I would use a puller and pull it off.

I've had to tap the pin sticking up with a hammer before. After WD40 or PBblaster. Once that pin is loose you will have to hold it down while pulling on the piece. Like everyone else said I would spray with WD or PB both in the hole and on all the splines behind the piece. The other option would be get a rubber mallet and tap on it like you're trying to move it on the shaft further. This may get it loose and then you can work it off. Once you get it pulled forward a little bit the pin should stay open by it self.
