hello I have a 2005 chevy 2500 diesel and when I pull with it should I use o/d or keep the o/d button off?I always use the tow button but for some reason when i hit the brakes slightly it really revs up or i mean the rpm's really go up almost or sometimes red lining not sure what to do i am really new with pulling trailer any help would be appreciated.most of my pulling is a 6x 10 dump trailer around #7000 lb's.and it only does it when coming down hills.

I normaly leave my Dmax overdrive turned on when I tow, as long as it is not searching back and forth from od to fourth gear, which it rarely does. I always, however, use tow/haul mode when towing. When in tow/haul, my Allison trans will sometimes downshift on deceleration when I touch the brakes, and like yours, come close to redlining. This is the transmission downshifting and keeping the torque converter locked up in an attemt to assist in slowing the truck down, which it assumes because of a number of factors, including brake application. Sometimes, mine will hang in fourth for what seems to be like a long time, and I will have to get into the throttle some to make it upshift. It always happens to mine on the same exact stretch of Ohio SR.528, only when heading North down a steep 1.5 mile grade coming out of Thompson Ohio. Every time when I tap the brakes coming into the bend at the bottom, the trans will downshift when I realy would rather it did not. My wife usualy just looks at me and says your truck is confused again, we both smile as I power back into it, it upshifts and is fine. Normaly, the down shifting feature works flawlessly, and I can exit the freeway towing 7k, begin coasting at the bottom of the ramp at say 60mph, and between the upward grade of the ramp and the downshifting, not have to brake until about 150 ft before the stopsign. It works so well most of the time, I just shrug it off when it gets confused .every now and then. I have owned it since new, it now has 90k on it, and it has been this way since new.

I'm not deeply familiar with the Allison, but I believe that is the engine/trans braking feature your referring to. It help's the truck slow down better without as much input from the service & trailer brake's. As far as O/D, depending on the load and if your running on flat ground or some smaller hill's, then theirs no reason not use it. The Duramax should easily be able to move down the road in O/D in any of those situation's. If you have a large hill coming up though, dropping out of O/D is better on everything, you don't want to lug it.

I've had both a Duramax with an Allision and now a F350 PS Turbo Diesel. I tow a 35' Rv that weighs in at 12,500. Use the tow haul button is will not allow the tranny to search for the the correct gear as it will be the correct gear. Also when going down hills the tranny will hold back the load that you are carrying.

I would say the o/d is ok on for loads upto 10-12K. Anything over that I would take it out of o/d on any stretch of road that is not absolutely flat. I had the same year Dmax/Allison and it did the same thing but probably even worse for me because I was towing a trailer that was 15,600# with surge brakes. With that type of brake you have to set them by decelerating the truck first. From what I have seen this is a common occurrence with the 5 speed Allison's, not sure about the 07's and later with the 6 speeds.

I had an 05 Duramax and now have an 07 Dmax. Both have the Allison. When you are in tow mode towing something and release your throttle (or touch the brakes while slowing down) the trans will downshift to assist with braking. On the 05 I tried towing in tow mode with the O/D on a long haul and think it was too much. When I stopped and shut it off then restarted it about 5 minutes later it sounded like it was running on 5 cylinders. I had to let it cool off for an hour or so then reset the trouble codes that came up then restarted it and all was OK. Temps all showed fine and this only happened once. Haven't had any problems with the 07.

It's just fine to tow in OD. In tow/haul mode it is suppose to downshift when you hit the brakes, the computer thinks you want to slow down so it is helping you do that.

in my 06 LLY dmax with 6speed the Tow haul is just amazing to have just normal driving hit the towhaul down a grade and tap the breaks and you dont have to touch the breaks again.Ive towed about 12,000lbs and when in tow haul it will down shift just about everytime you hit the breaks going down hill. When i tow anymore ive been using the Manual mode and that works nice.

does it hurt the truck when it is red lining?seems to red line and i am not sure what to do for this other than hit the gas.:) but sometimes i just want to coast down hill but can not cause it.'s always in the red. thanks for all the posts.

you shouldn't be redlining at all with any engine. What's the red there for, know what i mean ? I think you just need more time with your tow rig to be familiar with it and the more you drive it and the more you start anticipating things, you will be fine.
