I've found a few of the adult potato beetles in the garden but so far haven't seen any of the larvae or eggs.

I mixed up a couple of gallons rotenone awhile back intending to spray for the oat bugs on the egg plants ......... still haven't got around to doing it .... maybe today. It might be worth a try on the potato bugs ..... I'll see if I can locate any up there and hit them with it.

Not at all - I love seeing 'em !

Your garden looks great. Makes me resolve to get started a little earlier next year.

It's interesting ..... I haven't had a whole lot so far for some reason .... not sure exactly why ..... maybe the lack of rain ?

I sure didn't do anything before or after I planted to keep them down ..... other than just running the rototiller once and picking a few out here and there.

The worst of them are up where the pumpkins, squash and cucumbers are ..... there's one that's some sort of a vine that seems to grow rapidly and try to latch on to anything it can.

( Looks like your garden is really starting to come into it. )
Yeah, it's starting to ..... I think all the hot weather has really helped.

I measured out and mixed up enough Miracle Grow for 50 gallons of soultion yesterday ..... gonna see if I can get it on there today and see if that don't give it a little boost.

Listening to you describe your pickin's thus far is making my mouth water /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks Mike for the link. I know that at one time, the carbaryl (seven) was somewhat effective. I believe they have built an imunity to it. I have another class of spray I may use today, however sounds like picking them off by hand may be most effective.... it may take awhile to do that though!

The straw approach sounds interesting. Don't have any straw though.

I tried the BT (thuracide) that I use on cabbage loopers, but it didn't seem to work on the CPB larvea. I have read about a version of BT developed specifically for the potato bug, but haven't tried it.

I have potatoes planted before good friday, and some 1 month later....and both have been in a battle with these bugs.

Randall, now that you mention it... I did see that vine in one of your pictures. It looks to me like what we call wild morning glory vine around here. Some people call them bind weed. They will wrap around anything and choke them out. These are very destructive, and hard to get rid of. They have long white roots that go deep. You can pull one up...but a lot of the time the root breaks off, and the plant pops up again. When plowing, you may see these white roots sticking out. Probably harder to see if using a tiller. You probably just chop them into more pieces, with each piece starting a new plant. There was a discussion on this before... someone said it takes yrs to eradicate them. I have them in part of my garden and they are annoying to deal with.

Here is some produce I harvested out of the garden today. One savoy, and one stonehead cabbage, a couple buckets of contender bush beans, a bucket of cucumbers , and a bucket of zuchini. The warmth is creeping back into southern Indiana today. My shirt is wet with sweat. Time for a cold one.

Pete,

I think you nailed it - after looking at some pictures on the 'net it does appear that that is what they are. I've been trying to pull them out by the roots, but even after loosening them with a long handled cultivator the roots usually break off.

I may have to expand the garden next year in another direction to avoid these things. I did rototill the area .... so I might well wind up with a bumper crop of 'em.

BTW, nice haul out of your garden. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Pete those beans are looking good, Since I fenced my small garden, The deer and ground hog haven't bothered it, But now the rabbits won't let my beans grow /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif(they get through the fence) Never noticed rabbits around here much with the neighbors golden retriever... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Nasty, you sure know how to hurt a guy ....those corn pictures got me wishing for some. Mine is starting to tassle. The deer visited yesterday and sampled 5-6 stalks, and ate some sweet potato tops. This is the garden with 50lb test fishing line streched around. My other garden with 14lb test has not been breached. My conclusion....14lb is hard to see, and catches them off guard.
