Has anybody used Sevin to control bugs in their garden?

I understand it can be used effectively without killing the plants and of course poisioning the gardener and his family /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Please advise if its wise to use

We started dusting with Sevin dust just this season. We use a blower and apply it to the top as well as the bottom of the plant surface. So far the results have been positive. We'll see as the growing season progresses. Gotta be careful to wash your veggies before consumption if you are using chemicals.

My family has used Sevin ( carbaryl ) for yrs. Probably why I am bald now? I always try to get by without if possible...but hard to do. I like to use BT eg... like brand name Thuricide for cabbage, kale, broccoli, etc to control cabbage looper. It is a bacteria that screws up their digestive system, and supposedly safe to eat even just after spraying. For bean beatles, Seven works. For Colorado potato bugs, I guess there is a new version of BT for the red stage of the CPB that is supposed to work... I haven't tried it. I find Seven to have limited effect on the potato bug. My dad used to spend ours picking the buggers off and putting them into a coffee can with some oil or kerosene in it. Like I said, I try to use as little as possible, and not when things are blooming such as beans... as you kill beneficial insects that are only trying to pollinate your crop....

Sounds like my family. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif On my own garden, I never used any insecticides, but my dad and granddad both used Sevin dust on their gardens and even some of the liquid Sevin occasionally. And as a kid, I spent many hours picking potato bugs off the plants and putting them in a coffee can of water to drown them.

This year I've only dusted the tomatoes once, probably a month or so ago. Each year is different. Two years ago I had an abundance of worms. They destroyed the first crop of tomatoes. I had to keep everything dusted then. So far everything looks good this year with very little dust.

Also, I just picked 5 ripe cherry tomatoes! The first of the season. I have 8 plants of this type. That hard work is being rewarded. I love this time of the year.

We tried to get the garden in early this year but unfortunately after we did the weather went sour. So we had to replant most of the garden. The corn is still young but starting to come around. Our plantings were spaced about a week apart so hopefully we should have sweet corn for a longer period of time.

Mike, I am really getting hungry for some sweet corn on the cob....right about now. Your corn looks good.... a lot more even than mine. Mine is starting to come around, but I had to till under 4 rows that never came up very well. Several of my neighbors had to replant their corn this yr. I am not sure what the heck was going on here....maybe too cool and too much rain. All the corn replanted in the last 2 wks that I have seen around here is coming up real good. What is the last date to plant it to beat the frost? I usually have more problem with worms on my later corn for some reason....guess it has to do with the life cycle of insects and when the corn is coming into the silk period? Your soil looks good there.


HRS.... I'll take one of them ripe tomatoes off your hands.... or make it a handful in this case.
