Nice watering apparatus! How many rows do you water before they run dry? Sorry to hear that you guys are having such a drought. Hope it improves soon.

Moss - Thanks.

Mike - Thanks.

I think we've got enough planted that if you need some we could probably swing it, no sweat. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif .... either that or we're going to need to do some canning. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Give a holler if ya run short.

HRS,

Thanks. Good question .... I haven't really kept good track but I think I have filled it three or four times ..... all the plants have been watered at least three or four times and the seed (corn & beans) was basically watered once when it was put in the ground ..... although as I was doing the seed I went back over the seeded rows that were on the uphill end to make sure they got a good soaking. (The soil on the uphill end was a good bit drier than than the soil at the bottom of the row.)

I planted a row of Sugar Snap peas this morning and didn't water those as the cans were empty and they were calling for rain this afternoon. We had thunderstorms all around but only managed to get a 20 or 30 minute light drizzle here ....... barely enough to settle the dust.

I plan on getting the water line to the shed hooked up fairly soon so I can just run a hose over. The plastic line is already in the ground from the house to the shed - I just have to sweat about 6 or so joints on the copper in the shed and a couple down at the house and tighten the clamps on the plastic line and it will be good to go.

Randy, great looking garden and spot to put it in. I hope this tropical storm brings you guys some rain soon. We got a nice rain yesterday, but it was dry 3 miles from our house.

Thanks for sharing the picture of your water set-up. I have been thinking about some kind of small tank I could move around with my tractor and do just what you are doing if I get in a drought.

What are you using to put in those hills ... a cultivator or hiller?

On your eggplants do you have problems with these small black bugs...( I call them oat bugs ) ? I just planted some a few days ago, and in a matter of 2 days, the leaves had been riddled by these little buggers. Seems they really like eggplants for some reason.

Oh, forgot to mention that I harvested some snow peas and broccoli last night . We steamed the broccoli and stir fried the peas, and served them up with some grilled salmon. Nothing like eating fresh out of the garden.....except the salmon didn't come out of the garden that is....wish I could grow that too.

Pete,

Thanks - it looks like Pineridge and I have a good shot of getting a soaker from Arlene in a few days if nothing else materializes before then.

On the hills I used a furrower/hiller attachment for our 5 hp Troy-Built Pony tiller. When I did it the soil moisture on the upper part of the garden was just about right, the lower part was way too wet really .... clumped alot. Running it to layoff the rows in the 90° heat was a real treat ..... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif The rows aren't exactly perfect .... but good enough this time around.

I'm hoping by next year I can put together a removable toolbar/bedding plow on the back of the 60" KK tiller so I don't have to sweat quite as much. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yup - we're having problems with the black bugs here too - mostly on the eggplants (pretty bad actually) but I've seen them and some leaf damage on the tomatoes as well. I mixed up a solution of water and crushed red pepper seeds and let it soak for a couple of hours and then took the juice and sprayed it on the eggplant leaves (top and bottom) yesterday - haven't been up there since to see if they mind it all that much or not.

If the red pepper juice is not bothering them I'm going to mix up some rotenone spray this afternoon and hit them with that.

Randy, I wish you and Pineridge could have some of the excess rain that we're getting here in Northeast Kansas. It's going to start flooding around here if it doesn't let up soon. I too was begging for it 2 weeks ago and now it won't stop. I'd like to take some pictures of my garden to post but hate to take the new camera out in the rain.

Sasspete,
Here is my Garden. It has been very hot and dry in the Texas Hill Country. No problem though we are use to that. Just fire up the well and water away.
I planted some Basil, Habaneros, Jalapenos, about six different variaties of tomatoes, Cucumbers, Cantaloupes, and two different kinds of Watermelon. Every thing has something growing on them. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
My 3 year old Daughter loves tomatoes and eats them like candy. They don't grow fast enough. I'm not complaining though because with all the junk food out there, she can have as many tomatoes as she wants. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
The worms were really bad this year and they were eating everything in sight. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I put out the BT and that solved the problem. It took several applications until their larvae stage was over. No real pests to worry about now. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It would appear that my download failed. I will try one more time.

I can't seem to get my attachments to work. Sorry. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
