I'm looking for a medium duty 5' shredder for my New Holland TC35DA. I've read some on the web about Howser, Bushhog, Rhino, and a couple of others, but would like some advice from seasoned users. Are some markedly better than others, or is price in general the best guide for choosing? I know nothing about shredders, so any advice would be appreciated before I make an investment. Thanks in advance for the responses.

By the way...your 35 should run a 6' hog with no problems..

Howse and King Kutter are what I would call light/medium duty brands.. though they each make a HD line. Next int he medium duty line would be Kodiak.. from there you get into the medium heavy / HD and 'big 3' lines.

IMHO.. for non-comercial use.. and just homeowner use.. I'd go with a slightly cheaper brand... For me.. it's hard to justify paying 2x to 3x more for a mower I use occaionally. The pro-ponents of the $$ brands have a good point in that their $$ brands may last longer and be more durable... My take on that is.. sure.. your name brand may last 2x to 3x as long as mine.. and also cost 2x to 3x more... In the end.. i can buy 3 mowers.. and cost the same money as the name brand.. and at the end, counting equal years of mowing, will have a mower that is 1/3 as old as the old name brand...

I have a KK 5' model I used behind my NH 1920 That 1920 is roughly in the same class as the 35.. I mowed ant hills, rocks.. lumber.. etc.. have not had a bit of problem out of tat KK mower.. have had it for 4+ years now. Also got a HD line 10' hog from howse. was 3x to 4x cheaper than name brand models, save the kodiak.. which it was only about 1.5x cheaper than. I run that 10' mower with a 90hp tractor.. and it now eats rocks.. and brush and small trees nonstop for 2 mowing seasons, still going strong.

It's really up to you and your wallet. Get a 500/600$ hog.. or a 1200-1500$ hog...

Don't want to hijack this thread, but I recently purchased a 5' KK and wanted to ask a couple o' questions. Soundguy, does your 5' KK have the 40HP gearbox or the 60HP? Does it have a slipclutch or shearpin? I talked to my dealer about getting the 60HP gearbox with the slipclutch, but he recommended the 40HP with shearpin for my tractor (26HP/23PTO), so I went with his recommendation. I've only used it for about an hour, so I haven't developed a real opinion about it yet.

Also, the laminated wheel at the back of the kutter will not roll. It appears that the bolt/nut through the center of the wheel has been tightened too tight and is preventing the wheel from rolling. Did you have this problem? If I can find a wrench large enough, I'm going to back this nut off some and see if the wheel will roll.

Thanks,

BR

Suggest you see if your dealer has a wrench big enough....BobG in VA

I bought a Super sunshine by Modern Equip from Buemont TX in 6' size with a slip clutch. I paid $1350 for it. I wanted a heavy built cutter with a slip clutch as I tend to over work the shredder. I have been extremely impressed with the shredder.

40hp w/ shear pin.

Yes.. same problem. If you notice, that nut is a lock nut, so you can safely back off 1/2 turn and it will not come off. Then put the greas to it.. but DON'T overgrease or you will blow the hub seals. DO also grease the spindle.

It's a 5 minute fix with 2 big wrenches / sockets.

I have an L3400 HST Kubota. Have been using a Rhino SE5 Cutter for several weeks now. The terrain at my place is rough...covered with rolls every 6-8 feet, so I am in the dirt a good percent of the time no matter how I set the Hog. The Rhino hasn't slowed down yet. I'm impressed. I don't think it would qualify as one of the Upper Level mowers, as the cost was about $975. Hope that helps

Thanks, Soundguy.

That's what I hoped to hear. I'll get some bigger sockets/wrenches and loosen it 1/2 turn and grease it good.

How often do you go through shear pins? I need to get a few spares to throw in the toolbox. What size/grade is the shear pin?

Thanks,

BR

Grade 2 (soft) shear pin.. And i go thru 1 shear pin per ant mount /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.. Otherwise.. NO shear pins for just mowing brush.. only when i hit burried treasure.

After you mow it enough.. all the ant mounds are the correct height!!!
