I think we bring high prices on ourselves, the more features, the gizmo's the more we want and the more we pay.

Can you still buy a regular cab 3/4 ton 4 speed, with vinyl seat, vinyl floor, am radio and an option of A/C ... I don't know.

GPS, Onstar, Satellite Radio, CD, DVD, Back up camera's, all the bells and whistles ... And then we finance it!!!!

That is a good point blueriver. Our society has come to expect to have all the toys ....and all the whistles and bells (many of which many cant afford). For expample: my granddaughter has never seen a car made that has crank-up windows.....a luxury in time gone by.

Ha ha, my daily beater ('95 VW Jetta) has crank up windows. It has 235k miles and I'm hoping to pass it on to our oldest when he turns 16 in a year and a half.

My job is auto related and I am off for month go back Jan. 12. We normally shut down for the weak of Christmas but it has been extended Dec.17 through Jan.12. That plant is running but limited production. The lower senior people have to work, the high senior people such as me, are off with pay.

I think reducing corporate tax's and getting rid of silly regulations would help auto company's more than a bail out and it would be long term solution. And to get the economy going give every one a 3 month tax holiday and then reduce income tax by half. I feel that the hole mess is entirely the governments fault.

I don't think that us paying too much taxes is the problem, I would be more inclined to think that using your taxes to build a car factory for your competitors. Allowing your competitors to have totally free no restriction trade in your market place while the only ones that they will allow into their country is for the purpose of learning about your advancements so that they can reverse invent your product and sell it back to you might be a problem. Having Champion spark plug company offer to give the foreign countries spark plugs if they will use them in their cars, trying to get a start in the foreign market. The foreign countries even reject using them and they are for free that kind of free trade might be part of the problem. Signing free trade deals with countries with extremely lower standards of living and wages and no worker rights and absolutely no voice in what is going on and no safety regulations and no enviorenment regulations while you have all of these and calling that free trade that might be a problem. Having to pay tripple the amount of taxes you would normally have to pay because 2/3 of the high wage manufacturing jobs are gone and you are the only ones left that has to pay taxes while the others have a loop hole might be a problem. Another problem is there hasn't been a car that I know of that has been for under $10,000 for years and now there is two of them coming on the market just when the domestic small car market is trying to get a start that might be a problem, sounds like a gut kick to me, that might be a problem. Turning a deaf ear to the plight of the American workers and saying they can compete with countries that pay .50 an hour it has its effects.

Actually there are quite a few below $10,000 cars on the market but everyone wants all the options. Kia, Nissan, & Hyundai to name a few. Granted these are not American manufactures but they are out there.

You used to be able to buy the F-150 fairly stripped. I'd bet you still can, but you most likely have to order it. Crank windows, manual door locks, vinyl seat, etc...

??? Now thats a cut back ...

Not sure with the UAW contracts , but when we used to shut down for extended holiday due to low orders the people were paid from Vacation. The company has to hold the vacation time pay and when you get a raise your accrued vacation pay goes up too. (It's one reason I always want to leave a job with maximum vacation time in the bank)
