I just bought a used TN70 with a NH loader, and brought it home today. We got a foot and a half of snow last night, so I came home and started pushing back the banks with it. I noticed that the shuttle shift would pop out of gear occassionally, usually when in reverse. After plowing for a couple of hours I went to put the tractor in the shed, and the power shuttle shift light started flashing. I'll have to check tommorow to identify the code. The (four speed) transmission shifter also has some issues, as it doesn't want to go into low gear. (The lever bumps up against the loader joystick). It looks like that may just need a linkage adjustment. Does anybody have any ideas about this? All in all I really like the tractor. I use a 4630 at work, and I have an older Ford 5000. Thanks.

I've no idea of the SS problem but if i understand the problem with the joystick you will say that the lever is blocked by the joystick?
Had the previous owner a loader ??

BTW: do you know if it is possible to buy a TN with a 540 and 540E pto???

If i am wrong with the loader joystick, is it possible to sent a picture of the problem so everyone can understand the problem

Make sure the shuttle lever/switch is mounted tightly; the screws can back out. Also check to see that the boot is not out of position or wrinkled so as to put pressure on the lever. A loose switch or one without its insulating patch can allow the switch contacts to ground out causing what seems to be an unrelated powershuttle fault code. You may well have to replace the switch if the detent is weak.
Sounds like the 1-4 shift lever is bent or the anchor bolt is not engaging the dimple in the base of the lever. Pull the boot up and look around the base of the lever. There is not an adjustment of the lever position per se.

Thanks a lot, Rick. I went out this morning and took off the shuttle shift switch cover, and there is a small tear in the boot. I cleaned everything out, and turned the boot around the other way. Now it slips out in forward position, but at least I know that's the problem. I may just get a new boot, or put the torn side down. I was used to the mechanical shuttle on the 4630, and I had a "Oh!, That's how it's supposed to shift!" moment. It almost seems too easy. The 1-4 shifter had a loose anchor bolt, as you surmised. The lever engages much more easily now, although it doesn't move side to side very easily (just forward and back). Maybe I just don't have the "feel" for it yet. Thanks again for the info - you're providing a great service. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The TN's were noted for the 1-4 shifters to get rusty and set up to the point you could only use two gears so take a look at the linkage on the right side of the tractor and have some one move it for you and I think you will see what I mean. Usually a good soaking with penetrating oil and working it will loosen it up. if your dealer is not too far away I suggest you get a can of New Holland penetrating oil, it's good stuff. You will also see two tie rods that are part of the linkage, one of those may have come off. They just pop on and off as they are a ball and socket style pivot.

That's just what I needed to hear. Thank you. I've looked pretty closely at the linkage, and couldn't see why it wasn't going into the other two gears. I guess the previous owner had the same problem, and that's why the bolt on the shift handle had come loose (trying to force it into gear). I'll get some of the penetrating oil and see if I can loosen it up. It sure is a complicated looking linkage. Thanks again!

How did you finally fix your lever from popping out? Mine does it when its chilly and only reverse. Did you get a new lever or anything?

Let me know how it turns out, we have similar rigs...

Hi Jason - I have ordered a new shuttle switch. I think (hope) that the bad switch is also causing a transmission error code, and not allowing the tractor to move forward. Apparently the switches wear out, and then they pop out of position. It may also have something to do with the rubber boot around the switch becoming stiff in colder weather. That's the only weather we've had around here lately. I've included a photo.

NHeuro,
I've been searching for 540E availability on tractors for several months with little results. From what I can tell the only major manufacturer offering it on utility size tractors is JD, with the 5025 series.
MF has it only on their larger field tractors, and I believe on their specialty tractors which I've found to be scarce around here and seem to be very expensive.
McCormick offers it on their CUT's, but they don't have much of a FEL to offer.
