Shuttle shift transmissions?

The Kubota M series have Hydraulic-Shuttle transmissions available. My M6800 has it and it works well. The standard synchro-shuttle is a good trans, the hydro-shuttle just keeps your foot out of the clutch if you are doing a lot of loader work.

Growing up with fully manual old-iron, I still sometimes find myself clutching when I don't need to, but the hydraulic-shuttle is starting to become second-nature.

When I was looking at tractors, the Green, Orange, and Blue ones all had 'powered' shuttles available on the Utility sized models and up. I'm sure some of the Red ones do too.

Kubota also has a GST or glide shift transmission which allows clutchless shifting. It is basically an advanced shuttle transmission. Kubotas shuttle transmissions work very well. I use a L4850 with a shuttle. With a few thousand hours on it now, it's been absolutley trouble free. As mentioned, most manufactuers offer at least a shuttle transmission. The big three, Kubota, JD and NH certainly do. I have used all and find all work very well. Jerry G has a Massey which still to this day I have never seen one much less a dealer. For awhile there I figured they were gone. Jerrys presence reassured me they were still around. It was my first tractor. After using a shuttle, it would be very difficult to go back to a manual, I know because I have one with my International 454D.

I love the shuttle on my Kubota M9000.

Its not a hydro and you still have to use the clutch, but you can shift while the tractor is still moving.

Also, I noticed that you can shift gears while rolling too, but you have to have the RPM's just right.... kinda like on a semi truck.

I saw power reverser on TN, so that's reason why I ask you this question.
How do you park tractor securely, because power reverser disengage clutch when engine stops (no hyd pressure)? Ok, I know answer - park brake, but...does it have any safer system added?
I never believe to hand (park) brake, when I leave tractor on slopes. It is always in 1st gear, F or R, for case if brake uncontrolled disengage.

I have a power reverser JD 4710 on order and I'll be exploring this exact question. I've always parked gear tranny machines - whether car, truck, or tractor, in gear - along with using the parking brake. But - you're right, it appears that most if not all the power shuttle designs use hydraulic pressure to engage the clutch. I've always wondered why they didn't reverse that logic and use the hydraulic power to substitute for your leg power - to disengage the clutch. In any case the bigger JD's (5000's) with power reverser trannys have a parking pawl position that locks the gear train 'downstream' of the clutch. The 4710 doesn't have that. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif But, I'm curious how it will actually work in the flesh so to speak if you do park in gear and with the shuttle lever somewhere other than neutral.

On the 'to-do list' - I think I'll make a mount for a wheel chock somewhere as an extra precaution when I have to park on a slope - particular the grades I have back in my woodlot.

Still think I'll look for a pair of BIG (semi?) wheel chocks. Maybe if they're rubber I'll figure out how to clip them to the grill guard.
