Shuttle Shifter issues

   / Shuttle Shifter issues #21
Hi all, hope one of you can help me.
I have a 1994 555D Ford backhoe and when I have been using it anywhere from 20-30 min the shuttle shifter stops working and it won’t go forward or reverse. After it cools down it can be used again…. What is causing this? It’s a real pain and can’t get much work done…. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
may be a clogged hydraulic filter. I would do a Hydraulic service to it

Welcome to TBN.

When it does this, it won't even try to move?
If you lift the back end off of the ground and engage the shuttle, do the wheels move or try?
might check the transmission fluid and some tractors have to be filled a certain way or air gets in and causes it not to work,,,

When the back end is lifted off the ground it will not move. I will have him check fluid again. Thanks!!

The transmission oil is independent of the rear end oil and the hydraulic system. The transmission filter is the one on the LH side of the transmission.

Just wanted to give everyone an update to the issue I was having with the shuttle shifter. It turned out to be the battery. We replaced the battery and now we are having no issues with the shifter. Thank you all for your help and ideas.

Kris you had me wondering. Thanks for the update and I find it very difficult to understand

That's interesting. I would not have expected that to be the problem at all.

@ Mike & eKretz I don’t understand it either. Our neighbor works for the county and he told my son it was the battery so we had tried everything else so why not. Makes no sense to me either.

Makes some sense as the transmission controller depends on the battery, but if it started without issue, sounds like a ground problem for the trans controller. Whatever, you are back running smoothly.

I agree. I would expect that if the battery was able to start the machine and the alternator was working, the available power should have been far more than adequate to run the solenoid. They do not draw much power at all. Much less than a single work light, for instance. The battery may have been incidental.
