Sick of cutting grass in WNY

When I tell people at work that I live in West Virginia and their noses immediately go up in the air, I smile inwardly and agree with them about how grueling the hour and a half each way commute must be, and their unspoken "eeeww - those 'backwards' West Virginians".

Then, each day, on the hour and a half commute home, as the peace descends over me - it's ME who's smiling!

If they want to think that way about this area, and there are NEVER any 1/4 acre lots here in Jefferson County - fine with me!

Growing up, I remember how I liked the John Denver song "Shenandoah" - now I live less than a couple miles away. I'm Home. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Bird my x-wifes family is from Montcalm WV they live up on Brownie Lambert mountain. It's a onelane road up the mountain and they fly up and down that mountain in cars like it's a highway crazy. At night it's not to bad because you can see the headlights but during the day coming around some of those switchbacks watch out.

What really amazed me was watching them bring a mobile home up the mountain. They had to use a backhoe in the rear to swing the trailer around the turns. Then watching them set it up on the mountian side it took a bunch of blocks in the rear of the trailer and nothing in the front. Quite a show that day. Then again I'm quite easy to amuse./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I've watched some of those guys put some mobile homes in places in this part of the country that I didn't think they could do, but in Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia I've seen some mobile homes that made me wonder how they ever got where they are unless they used a sky crane.

Bill; An hour and a half from Jefferson County to DC, must be doing that one at 5 AM on I-70/I-270 at 90 MPH /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. Sometimes, it takes me over an hour just to make it from the Frederick/Montgomery County line to Bethesda. Don't envy the commute, but I do envy you having the property in Jefferson. It is nice there. Use to spend a lot time at Morgantown with some friends in the mid-70's.

Back to the original subject. Our cold spell never lasted, but the rains and warmer temperatures did return. So, I had to cut the grass today, yet again. Not complaining, though, I consider myself lucky. After the snows we had last winter, and the rains this Summer, I sure picked a good year to buy the sub-compact. The mow time was drastically decreased, and a blade sure beats a shovel for snow removal!

Something they had on the Washington, DC news yesterday. This was our fourth coolest summer on record. (They claim 1972 was the coolest, but I'll be dang if I remember it that way. Graduated from High School that year, so I guess I was literally oblivious to my environment). Now for us Mid-Atlantic and New England folks, they said that the coolest summers were always followed by average temperature winters. Hope that holds out to be true for all those heating by oil this winter.

Roy:
As a matter of fact, I leave the house at 4:30, catch the van pool in Charles Town, then we go down 270 and into the District. I'm in my office by ten after 6.

Speaking of grass cutting: We drove to California and back to pick up the Kubota two weeks ago so the 3.75 acres went un-mowed for ten days. Boy was it high when we got back! Been trying to catch up but I have to mow at max height on the 42" garden tractor or it will just gum up underneath. I'm just trying to survive the rest of the season with the garden tractor so I can wait until next spring to get a mower for the Kubota.

Was cutting grass tonite with the JD 318 and had a coat, wool cap and gloves on. Finished mowing just after dark and looked at the thermometer... 40F /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif. Smell like frost tonite /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif.

I know this is a little late but...... I'm just sitting here and getting chills just looking out the window when I found this page. Mowing grass is like a bad day of fishing, it's better than any day of cold weather and plowing snow!!!!!

Gary,
When the grass starts growing you are more than welcome to come down and cut my grass! I'll even let you bring your own tractor! I'm sure after you do it for a few weeks you will be sick of it as I am! Heck I look out the window and love watching the snow and the kids playing hockey on the rink out back. And I would rather plow snow than cut grass any day!

I don't mind the mowing when it's dry but my yard needs mowing now and I'd have to drive through puddles and mud to do it. It'll really need mowing by the time it gets dry enough to do it. The thing I don't like is the trimming and weed eating that can't be done sitting on the tractor.
