THANK YOU EVERYBODY.The family is doing good,im taking it the hardest.Im really depressed about not having her by my side. The grave is beside my tractor road ,and i talk to her each time i drive by...nuts huh? Just trying to put my nose to the grindstone, stay busy and move on.
PATRICK,It sure does hurt ,i was wondering if a new dog would ease the pain, but MELINDA says no,because we are on the road so much.Pepper went with us ,unless we were on the atvs,or at work.Im sorry for your pain,im with ya buddy.
ALL THE REST OF YOU WHO TOLD THEIR STORY OF FAILING DOGS:, CUDDLE WITH THAT DOG ,SCRATCH HER BELLY,AND SPEND EVERY MOMENT YOU CAN WITH HER.Pepper use to love it if i laid on the floor and watched tv,shed cuddle right up to me ,like a teddy bear.
It will be interesting to read this thread in a year, right now im in a wicked depressed mood...just a stage of death and dieing i suppose
Thanks for being so kind and compassionate to me ,i love the folks on this site

We lost "Tiki" a pure white husky/shepard mix to liver failure several years ago. The vet did what they could over a 10 day period. The last 3 or 4 days she stayed at the vets then they sent her home to us. After a night of watching her, it was clear she was suffering and we made the call the next AM and took her to the vet one last time. I gained a lot respect for the vet as they let us make the decision and nudged us towards the end by sending her home to us. I cried when they gave her the shot and the vet did too. I've owned 3 or 4 dogs since then and have had some great ones but none like Tiki. Sam was my 4 year old at the time sons dog who we got 8 months after Tiki went to heaven. After a while with no dog we as a family decided it was time to get another and Sam, who was a multicolred female husky/shepard mix came to live with us. About 2 years ago Sam went to be with Tiki and I cried again. We have Dixie, a hound dog,who was Sam's good friend for the past 9 years and now she is slowing down. Hayley is the newest at almost 2 years old and a collie/shepard mix. It seems to ease the pain of losing one dog if you have two so thats what we have been doing with short mourning periods, for the humans as well as the other dog, in between the loses.
It's OK to feel the way you do and after a mourning period you can get the excitement of a new puppy. The new dog won't be the one you lost but can reward you with many of the same things and some new things your other dog did. Good Luck.

I would never be without two dogs. And, I would gladly change my schedule to fit the needs of a pup or two. If you get two, they will keep each other company if left alone and will do just fine by themselves.

Now that I am retired, the dogs go everywhere with me unless I would have to leave them in the car in the summer. If the weather is cool, they ride along and just stay in the car if I go in a store. Usually, whatever I do gets done at 1/3 speed because they are always wanting attention, but they are wonderful companions.

DW is a psychologist and she says it is a proven fact that people with pets live longer than those without...

Alan, no, not nuts at all. Jack passed on our bed one evening just before Easter. We buried him down in front of the house the next morning, blanket, one of my shirts, our other two dogs (Ruby and Kalani) watching. We planted palm trees and gardenias and made the place special. I shed plenty tears then, more reading your story, and even now as I type this. Sometimes they just leave a hole in your heart that won't be filled. We've since got another male pup (Flash) and he is his own joy, often times reminding me of Jack. We often walk him and the girls down by the grave and visit. When I pass by on my tractor, mowing, I still talk to him. I thank him for still watching over us and tell him I miss him.

David
