Sickle on a BX2200?

So $400 isnt really a steal if it needs work, but isn't a terrible deal either, just depends on what may or may not need done right?

If both left and right clamps are gone, you are looking at $300 at Ford/NH. Condition of rock guards and sections in the knife all come into play. Any old welds or breaks also a NO NO. Grassboard missing $35. Ken Sweet

Hey Ken,

If it helps, I called the guy and it is a model 515 and it IS 5'. He said he has the manual as well.

I didn't look it over very well, but it appears to be in ok working condition with nothing broke or bent. Probabally 50% blue paint and 50% rusty.

So do you think $400 is a good deal? average?

EDIT: I just seen you have a 515 6 footer for sale for $895. In appearence, this one looks about the same as the one you have. So if everything checks out good, $400 is pretty good then right?

Found a Haban 5' sickle with hydraulic lift. Used, but looks excellent. Asking $1,300. Seems like a lot to ask for a sickle mower that you can't get parts for. Also found a 5' IH sickle that looked good for $1,200. No hydraulic lift and don't know if it can drop below horizontal?

The Ford 515 is the worst sickle mower ever built + they are a PITB to mount. The one you saw on my site for $895 had been there for 3 yrs and never sold, so I dumped it at a consignment sale for $150 and commission came out of that. The Ford 505 is the belt drive you would want. It is the same as the IH 1300 and New Idea 522. Ken Sweet

Thanks. Good to know:thumbsup:

I am sure glad I didn't buy it:mad:

Was there an optional hydraulic lift on them? If so, can you retrofit the hydraulic lift parts onto it? (If the parts are still available...)

Why would anyone need a hydraulic cyl on a sickle mower when the "Automatically" follow the hills either up or down without leaving the tractor seat? If a person is disabled or handicapped, I could see where a cyl would be a necessity to raise the bar to transport and to lower to mow position. Ken Sweet

I want to be able to raise the cutterbar and keep it set at a given height to do some of the cutting jobs I had.

A adjustable clipping wheel that mounts on the end of the cutter bar does that job. You can mow from 2 inches up to 8 inches with a clipping wheel installed. Ken Sweet

Theres applications where having hydraulic SBM bar raise/lower from the seat is advantageous. Especially when one is mowing multiple banks and around ponds where transporting time is as much as mowing time.
While somewhat related, I added hydraulic bar lift to my WH L&G 5' sicklemower and it's so handy that I would defintely add it if I were to purchase a SBM for my BX23.

If there is a kit or anything that can be fabricated to let a IH, Ford, NH, Massey, Deere, etc. belt drive mower have its full 90 degree vertical and 70 degree below horizontal range of movement, I would like to see the design. Ken Sweet

I built one out of a wheelhorse unit but have not got it finish that could pull with my atv around the pond and I put a small 6hp kohler on it. You could look for a pull behind unit as it don't put any wieght on the tractor and take little to no hp to run.
Some thing like this 251 New Idea Pull Type, Farm Tractor Sickle Bar Mower | eBay

if ya look at the link powertroke444e noted from ebay. and enlarge the pictures.

you can make out 2 guide rails. that hold the sickle bar up off the ground. and allows the bar to follow the ground.

one right at the base of the bar. then a smaller one at the very end of the bar. ya let the bar down. and the rails hold the bar up off the ground. the ones i have seen. you can adjust these guide rails up and down to get different cut heights for example 1" to 4" cut heights. (well maybe not that big of difference but hopefully get idea across)

went to auction was it last week. and saw some sickle bars, i wanted the trailer / pull version. that ran off of the PTO. with a single hydrualic to lift bar. but it ended up going way over, what i could spend. and ended up getting a 5 foot bush hog pull type for $55 bucks.

the trailer pull type looked like the ebay link, but was i would say in worse shape than what ebay one looks like.

i would of went with the 3pt hitch types, but the old allis chalmers CA tractor has snap coupler setup vs a 3pt hitch. and spending 400 plus for 3pt conversion just not worth it now for me.

if ya had a tractor with a good FEL, and sat low to the ground, with either 4x4, or MFWD, and/or possibly chains on back tires. you could get a 3pt bush hog. and just reverse down into the embankments. it is a little scary. but have seen it done many times. never got the guts myself to do it tractor i have, is to top heavy.

every now and then. i might come across on craigslist, or in local trading papers. a old tractor with a built on sickle mower. either side mount or 3pt hitch. and primary used just for the sickle mower.

Good pic. Those are your inside and outside skid shoes and like you said can be adjusted 1-2 to 4-5 inches easily and if you need more height, you can use a clipping wheel on the end. I will post a pic when I get caught up. Ken Sweet

That's exactly my situation. I'm mowing stream banks (below horiz) on one part of the property and mowing nearly vertical on another part of the property.

We carry 2 lines of new double action sickle mowers. Both with hydraulic lift cylinders Enorossi and Superior 394. $3695 for 7 ft in either brand. Ken Sweet
