side hill in vermont

I would look into getting a Mercedes Unimog 406. They could come equipped with 3pt hitches, pto's and hydraulics. They are a lot better than a regular tractor on a sidehill and they will do about 45-50 on the road. A search of this forum will bring up information on them.

Take notice what others in your area are useing...if you decide tractor w/front loader also consider rear tire chains.

What would you consider the best source for double diamond logging chains for 420/70-24 R4 tires?

B-B in Milford, NH has 'em for around $800+ shipping.

Regular tire chains won't help you much on a side hill, go for the double diamonds. I have tried all kinds of chains on steep slopes, double diamonds work the best. Labonville is a good place to get them.

As for a machine on a side slope, that is one of my specialties. I do erosion control, road building and excavation on a lot of terrain similar to VT. A small excavator (3-8 ton) works great in the summer months, don't even try on snow/ice. Ledges are problematic, but if you plan your moves you'll be ok. Tractors are ok in some situations, but not for steep sideslopes. As soon as you try to pull cross hill you're going to slide. Plan your roads for up and down, and cut the side hill roads into the slope so they are level. This alos helps with erosion issues. Dozers have some of the same issues. You'll get more done with an excavator, but a dozer will get by.

Good luck, be careful. Be sure to load the tires and buy wheel weights. Load light and go often.

Newbury, you got some pretty nasty terrain there, need a helicopter to get around that patch of woods. Maybe that's why you moved to Mississippi?
And I messed up my drawing, I've been up for FAR to long.
Actually I'm going to move to Mississippi because of my wonderful wife. Her family's down there and I'm working on getting a full square mile of property.
Coincidentally every leap year the day after tomorrow is our anniversary.
