Siding Suggestion Needed

We have to replace the siding on our house this year so this is very informative. The Hardy product seems highly regarded and looks pretty easy to install. We have also looked at "manufactured / fake rock" but man is it expensive. Nobody commented on vinyl? It's very cheap and easy to install. Any reason people have shied away from it?

Last year I was in Ft. Smith Arkansas after it was hit with a bad hail storm with very large hail. I noted that almost all the vinyl sided houses in the most affected areas suffered severe damage. The vinyl had large holes all over it as though it were made of glass and had shattered upon impact. The hail was so severe it destroyed many asphalt shingled roofs.

There were a few standouts without visible siding damage. Upon closer inspection I found these to have fiber cement siding.

I plan on building near this area and I will use either Fiber cement siding or brick.

Has anyone used the vinyl siding that makes the house look like a log cabin?

We originally wanted this or board and batten, either one done in a natural wood finish. It would look great but the maintenance scares me. So many homes with wood siding look shabby after a short while.

NOTE: this comment does not relate to prefinished siding made of wood from companies like Maibec.

What I want is siding that looks like it belongs on a dirt poor West Virginia house, but wears for 50 years without maintenance

"Asphalt roofing shingles"

I own a small house that was built around 1930 that has lap board siding below the windows and asphalt roofing shingles the rest of the way up... they are still in good shape and really do not look bad...this house is less than 1/4 mile from the Gulf of Mexico (West Central FL) and has been through many tropical storms and hurricane force winds...

2YD-- if you choose Hardi-plank, a few tools will make the installation easier. 1st, a saw with a diamond blade for cutting this mateial. 2nd, a 12" speed square. 3rd, a good set of sawhorses to work off. Lastly, a couple sets of installation tools, Malco makes a great set. I say two sets if your hanging it yourself. I've used it on my buildings and would never go back to wood siding. Great stuff.

Here's a photo I took of our house while installing it.

This year I will be residing my 14'x66' mobile home. Due to the weight of cement board siding, it isn't a good option for me. I currently have aluminum, over 2"x4" studs, and no vapor barrier. I am interested in the Smart Siding, as it is lighter, easier to install, and dent resistant. Now I am reading about the Oracle siding product. I like the idea of incorporating insulation into the product. Decisions, decisions...

The purpose is, like in WVa, to convince the revenooers the property isn't so valuable so the taxes are lower!! The inside of the house were you actually live can be really nice, won't jack up the taxes :D

I'm sorry but I can say anything about Hardie products. I'm dirt poor and I live in West Virginia, so I can't afford it.

I have natural, real cedar siding on my 3500 square foot home. It is a lot more work to maintain, but I love the looks of it.

I am even educated too. I can spell revenuer.

That's a pretty big house you have there---must be a still in there somewhere!

If any of you plan to work with Hardie, or any other fiber-cement product, remember to use a dust mask! It's bad to breath in that dust. I plan on using it on my house, for all of the reasons cited- durability, fire proof, and good looking. Have any of you tried to cut shapes in it? I'd like to do scalloped and diamond shingles in my peaks- what would you cut that with? I was thinking a jig and a carbide router bit. I know you can buy the scalloped shingles, but I've never seen the pointed ones. Alternating those two shapes was done a lot on Victorian houses.

Sorry Mike, no still, but I do have a few Morel mushrooms on the front of the hill. In the right market, they might bring in more money than shine. The last roadside seller that I saw was getting nearly $20 per pound for them.

No Ginseng around those parts?...it goes for $800 LB (not as light as Morels either)

We used to have a lot of Ginseng, but with the prices in recent years, it is getting harder to find. We have a limited season on the stuff, with state law requiring the replanting of the berries in the dig spot of the parent plant, but I'm afraid that the state may need to put a bit of a tighter wrap on the digging. I really hope that I'm wrong on that one though.

The deer around us do a great job at wiping out plants. I saw my first one last year, i went back to get a piece of fence to put around it and when i got back it was just a small stock with no leaves.
Speaking of the houses with shingles on the sides, we had a lot of old coal mine company homes like that, wood with those on the sides the houses outlasted the owners. But there was no resale value, the house was demoed and the lots sold off.
