Belarus 825
I have a Belarus 825 (it isnt a "compact" per say but this is a great forum so I wnated to get folks thoughts) and was out working in the paddock today and it ran out of fuel (gauge doesn't work). I went and got some fuel and put 10 gallons in it. I attempted to hand prime it and try to start. I thought it was going to kick over and it did but ran really rough (for instance, throttle was set at 1/2 open and it would just fluctuate from 300 RPM to 1400 RPM (when it should be at smooth 1600 RPM at half throttle)) and finally just died. I attempted to restart and my hand slipped off the key, before the engine could completely stop I turned the key and BOOM seized the engine. I reached up and turned the key again so quickly I didnt even have time to tell myself to wait like I normally do.

I have some mechanical expertise and I have replaced engines in older model cars before, but never rebuilt an engine or other major part. I also have a large array of tools.

So basically I am considering an in-frame engine rebuild. Is that the right approach?

I was going to take a socket & breaker bar and attempt to manually turn over but have read that is a 1 in a xxxxxx shot that works.

Basically any and all thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks!

Sounds like the starter is jambed into the flywheel maybe just remove starter and check out the teeth

I will do this this afternoon, I hope it is something this minor!!

Thanks!

Kenstrac has a good point. If it still does not turn over BY HAND it could be hydro locked (cylinder(s) full of fuel). if so could remove injects and try and turn engine over. maybe the inject pump and/or injectors caused this and might need rebuilt.

I had a couple of 825's,used them in my logging operation, they wern't pretty but rough and tough.
Ran out of fuel myself a few times, and had the starter jam the flywheel and I would almost bet that is what happened to yours. Anyway good luck , hope you get it up and running soon.

Starter jam was my thought even before I read all the other posts. I live over in this part of the world and see these all the time. They definitely di dnot go in for style and creature comforts, but they seem like work horses.

I am assuming that taking off the starter, turning the flywheel via the front belt pulley and reinstalling the starter would fix a jambed starter?

Thanks All!

Never assume, check the flywheel gear all around if teeth are good check starter gear and test starter for proper operation before reinstalling.

Really sounds like you jammed the starter through out gear into the flywheel.

I do it all the time on small engines.

Hope that is all it is.

Good advice, pull starter, check it's gears, spin motor (that would mean not siezed) and check flywheel teeth.

Could by hydraulically locked, but would think unlikely as it was sputtering at the time, would expect it would've been blowing raw fuel out the exhaust if it was getting that much fuel, I could be wrong though.

Good luck,
Joel

Thanks guys, it was a jammed starter. I took the 3 starter bolts off and then it was a real bear to get it disengaged, but finally I did. I checked everything and all looked good, reinstalled and VROOOM Boris started right up!

MANY MANY thanks to you all!!!! :)

I wish that all apparent disasters were this easy to fix. Glad you got it going!

Glad you got it up and running, like I said before they arn't pretty but tough and very easy to work on all you need for tools is a hammer, adj. wrench and a screw driver......:)

Glad to hear it was an easy fix, and thanks for posting back and letting us know what it was.
