Yes, I think that you'll be much happier with the 3.73 gears and the 18 or 17 inch wheels.;)

Aren't they really expensive, too? I'm not a "bling" guy. Just give me 16" load range E tires and I'm happy.

1/2 ton trucks arent coming with 16" wheels anymore. 17's are hard to get these days. seems like every year they get bigger and bigger. you have to step up to a 3/4 ton to get 16" wheels now. my truck is an 04 and i believe they stopped with the 16" wheels in the middle of 05.

You did good by walking away. If they want to sell a truck they will find you what you want. Remember, it may be ok for now but we always go bigger on things like trailers and tractors. I have had 6 F-150's with 5.4L engines and there is a world of difference between 3.55 and 3.73 gears. I had one with 4.10's and it was one tough truck but the 3.73's seem to be the perfect fit.

Thats my concern is 3.55's might have done an okay job pulling it around between small towns but how about the open road and down the road I would like to get a larger tractor (3520 cab) which weights in at a lot more than my current tractor.
Also when i take ATV trips I have a deck over I use and we smash 7 atv's on it and one in the box and that deck over trailer isn't light.

Thanks for all the info again saved me from getting the wrong truck setup.

Are you REALLY going to be pulling your LOADED trailer around more than a few % of your mileage ?
Unless doing so is your "Biz" (and with that tractor... I doubt that it is) I think your other xx% driving will be less pleasant with the lower overall gearing - if that is what it turns out to be, but since you don't know the O/D internal ratios and/or different tire rolling circumferences - the differences can't be determined.

Tow/haul mode ? That would get you what you want/need when towing and give you BACK the higher overall gearing when not.
I really LIKE it on the Allison

BTW, why were you going to downgrade ?
