Hey guys,

Sorry for all the posts, got a lot of projects going on right now. I was hoping you gentlemen could give me some advice. So my neighbor has a Silverwing trailer he would like to sell. He is asking $1,500 for it and is firm. I offered $1,250 and he declined it. A buddy of mine told me to buy it regardless. He said I could probably turn around and sell it for a small profit if I could not use it.

I already contacted Silverwing and they seem like they at least have good customer service. If I remember correctly it is a very quality aluminum trailer that is pretty heavy considering it is aluminum. As in it is heavier than a equivalent sized steel trailer with deck boards.

So I would like to use the trailer personally. I would love to use it to tow my Ferris around. Silverwing told me I needed to consider that the ramp is 42" and only rated for 600lbs. Plus the said even though the trailer has a 2,000lbs axle they recommend keeping the load under 1,000lbs. So on their website they advertise a Polaris 800 SW-9 getting loaded onto it. The information I could find says they weigh around 1,100 pound which is close to my Ferris. Another concern that they pointed out that I was also aware of is that a lot of the weight on the Ferris is on the drive tires versus a UTV/ATV having that weight a little more evenly distributed.

Anyway, I do a lot of odd jobs that I think the trailer may come in handy for. I do a lot of yards that are within 5 miles of my house. Most are under a mile but I am sick of driving my Ferris to these jobs. So this could really help me out. Anyway I would love to hear your guys' thoughts on this. The cost, quality, ramp, weight capacities etc.

600lb. ramp with a 1000lb load probably wouldn't work too well. It's a 1000lb load because the trailer weighs something and it's on the axle too. ;)

So if you check out this link it says the trailer only weighs 440lbs. So that roughly leaves me with 1,500lbs of capacity on the deck. I remember a buddy of mine telling me that they are known for quality trailers. I do think the biggest concern is whether or not the ramp is going to start bowing over time. It is aluminum so I can see it slowly starting to sag and creating a problem. I was thinking about asking Silverwing if it is possible to get a upgraded ramp. I guess it may be possible to reinforce it myself if I can find someone that welds aluminum.

Lowes near you has brand new 5'*10' with 1,300# load capacity for sub $2k.
Full price.
If you shop around should find even less or a design that better suits your needs.

For the extra $4 or $5 hund I think I would go new and get new wood deck and new rubber. Less worries when new.

So it is really funny you mention that. Because I was just at Lowes today. They have an aluminum trailer there that is a 6x10 but it is $3,600. It does have deck boards rather than being all aluminum. I actually took these pictures but you can see after reading the reviews just like anything at the big box stores they leave something to be desired. These Silverwing trailers are suppose to be a step above all this other stuff. Do not get me wrong this trailer is a nice looking trailer. This is another reason this Silverwing is probably a good buy. Just I am not sold on it. It is 5' and my Ferris deck is 52" and after you account for the actual deck being a little longer than that it is a tight fit.

I already did the math and I will have two or three inches on both sides to fit my Ferris. I don't think this is my main concern though.

I do need a trailer. I am limited on space on my property. I have always wanted to get a 7x10 tandem or a dump trailer. I was honestly very, very close to buying a dump trailer a couple years ago for $8,000 that had ramps in it. Just not sure if I want to be pulling that around all the time, especially considering it will probably take more fuel to pull around. Just I would never need another trailer and I think your equipment is also safer in the back of a dump trailer.

On the topic of dump trailers, Lowes had one there today for like $8,000 and I noticed it looked like it may have a place for the ramps but no ramps. Maybe they remove them because of people stealing them?

Or you could always buy a pair of HF 1500lb ramps for $150.
I have no clue why I didn't think of this, thank you! I also like discount ramps.

When I was shopping for a trailer recently I found it very hard to save any real money with buying a used trailer vs driving a few hours to buy new right from the manufacturer. That's saying something because I'm in an area of the northeast that's a manufacturing desert.

So there is a business here in Winchester, VA about forty minutes from me that always seems to have quality trailers in stock. So what do you guys think of using a 10' or 12' long dump trailer to haul equipment in?

As far as this Silverwing trailer goes, I would be saving about half. They are $3,000 on Amazon and have came down a good bit from when they sky rocketed last year.

Also now that newbury got me looking I found this on Discount Ramps. They look super cool. At this point after shipping and everything I would be spending around $3,000 that could be put towards a new trailer that would better suit my needs I guess lol.

As sweet as they look, and light as they seem to be, I stay away from aluminum trailers simply due to the fact that aluminum is harder to fix than steel, and usually requires more repairs than a similar ""worked hard, put away wet" steel trailer.I have the equipment and capability to repair either one, but chasing cracks in an aluminum trailer isn't as much fun as it would seem.
If you need a dump trailer, then fine get one and use it all the time, but realize that your costs for ownership and hauling a trailer will go up. If you don't need one, or very seldom,, skip the dump and buy a bigger trailer with sides to keep your equipment safe. Enclosed is even safer, but then the weight comes back into play as well as the initial investment.
