so to fit a rear remote valve to operate a hydraulic tipping trailer with only a single acting cylinder, do i need a special single acting spool valve? or do i just hook up a double acting valve differently? or do i modify a double acting valve somehow?
i'm guessing it isn't just as simple as fitting it out as a double acting remote and just plugging the trailer hose into one of the two rear remote sockets for that valve? if that even makes sense?

open center system if that makes a difference

Ed you need some way to bleed the oil off to let it down. So either a double acting valve that has the float function and put it in float mode to let it down or you need a single acting valve. You can tee into the line and have a separate hand controlled ball valve, to let the oil out, but that can get so that it is not very convenient. I would go with the float function valve if you are starting from scratch.;)

I think one doesn't have to have float on a double acting valve to lower a tilt trailer with a single acting cylinder. My 6700 ford lowers single acting cylinders on hay rake without float position.

well, a single acting valve would seem the logical and 'proper' way to do it in my mind but i am struggling to find any single acting valves in the UK so i will see if i can find a double acting valve with the float function
as a double acting valve has two outlet ports wouldn't this valve try to feed oil to the other outlet if i accidentally knocked it too far to the return setting, would this cause a problem as i would leave the second port disconnected?

is it a problem that you haven't got anything connected to the other outlet/inlet on the valve when using single acting cylinders? i'm guessing not?

You are correct that you do not need a valve with float to operate SA cyls. To use a common
valve usually used with DA cyls, just run a hose from the B work port to the Tank return. You can Tee
into the existing return, or run a separate line. The A work port goes to the SA cyl port.

You can also just leave the B port capped off so that when you operate the lever to let the load
down, the implement pump just goes to relief. This brief time on relief will not hurt anything. I did
this with my SA cyl on my concrete mixer for a while, before I converted to a DA cyl.

So how does he do this with a single line properly? These other ways that have been mentioned may work, but are they right? :confused3:

considering this trailer only gets used half a dozen or so times a year and probably gets tipped less than 50 or so times a year i will probably just kit it out for double action and then i might T into the return line and run a line up next to the B out let for use when tipping the SA trailer

Run a return line with a male quick disconnect. You can plug it in when using single acting or unplug it when using double acting. The male tip will not leak when unplugged since it has minimal pressure being a return line.

Blow this picture up and you can see how I did mine. I use a 12v off and on valve, tee into the tank return line. Just flip a switch and it comes down and if you forget to switch it back it well not dump. I didn't like my relief valve sound off while the bed was comeing down and it was slow.
