I've found that dual axle trailers back up a good bit better and track a good bit better but I don't see why you couldn't use a single axle 900lb trailer to haul a 2500lb tractor. I'd get a 3500lb axle on it. With 10% on the tounge truck side you'd still have a couple hundred pounds of capacity on the trailer side.
One of my friends has a 14ft single axle and it is large enough to haul 2 large ATVs on. He puts it in a one car garage, pretty good set up.
