I saw a small plow for sale yesterday for what I thought was a reasonable price ( $50.00 ) so I stopped and inquired about it. The owner said he bought with a small tractor and he didn't have a need for it since he had a MF135 and a two bottom plow. I noticed that it did not have a 3 PT attachment and I wonder how effective it would be dragging it behind a tractor. I don't see how you would be able to finish a row and start another. What am I missing here ? Is this where you would use a drawbar to raise and lower with the lift arms ?

How effective is a plow dragged behind horses? /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Very effective.

Now that I've reread this, that does sound kind of silly ! I was just thinking that there would be no down pressure and the plow might just bounce along the ground....

I don't think the plow would be very effective. Horses and mules did pull drag plows but they had a man behind the plow holding it down. You are probably looking at a garden tractor plow that requires a sleeve hitch. There are several manufacturers that make small single 12 or 14 inch 3 pt. plows for as low as $175. They can be found on the web.

A little tough decyphering what you are asking. Do you have a picture of the plow that you could post? There were 1 bottom plows that were pulled by tractors without 3pt systems. I had one once that was attached to a Deere LA, and the plow beam went forward under the rear axle, and was pulled from ahead of the rear wheels. The lift was a mechanical lever. Worked great. There were also 1 bottom plows that hooked to the drawbar, and were on a set of wheels. Levers were reached from the seat for adjusting the depth and tilt of the plow share, and a rope was used to trip a mechanical lift mechanism to lift the plow out of the ground (or trip it to drop the plow back to the ground). These plows on wheels were also used with horses pulling them.

<font color=black> I've got a Simplicity 7016 and as tough as it is I don't think I could pull this plow with it. I'm going to try and go back and look at it again tomorrow. I want to look at the attachment point again. The more I think about it the more I think it attaches to a drawbar.

I don't have a picture available and I have looked online and have not seen anything exactly like it. It had a 12" plowshare and a small metal wheel that was positioned above it. The wheel had a grease zerk to grease the shaft. There was a L shaped piece of angle that ran the length of the plowshare and then stopped a few inches back behind it. There was a small handle that you could turn that changed the pitch of the plowshare slightly.

Were there car type tires on it?

Check this out.

I dont think you realy need down pressure on a plow. If its set up right, it does it itsself. But I could be wrong./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

One of the posters was correct about sleeve hitch.
The plow is probably a Brinley plow.
Cub Cadet and others used these(60-80's).
Sleeve hitch raised and lowered w/ the same
lever as mower.
I have one in my barn from 127 CC.
When raised the point is pointing down then
when pulled forward on ground it cuts in and goes down
till the plow is level and the angle on bottom helps
maintain depth.
Hope this helps.

Ploughs:
There are many pull behind plows that attach to the drawbar. Yes even modern day ones. Some may even have 10 to 12 plowshares on them which make them incompatible for a three point hitch. Some have two sets of plough shares so the land can be worked in a continuous row and eliminate the Dead Furrow. Each set is angled for a different direction and upon reaching the end of the field they are hydraulicly reversed for the trip back.
The older tractor pull behind had levers the operator could reach to set the depth. To lift the plow out of the ground one front plough wheel had a ratchet attachment activated by a pull that would lift the plow. Another pull and the plough would drop.
Tractors were rated on the number of plough shares they could pull, not on horsepower.
In other cases stationary engines were set up and cable arrangements pulled the plough back and forth.
If you want to see an impressive plough find a picture of an old steam tractor in action.

Well,

I went back today and I believe it is indeed a sleeve hitch. ( apologies to professor) However I went ahead and bought it any way because I think I can use it with some modification. It does look similar to the David Bradley plow shown at the website Paul linked to but it is longer and a little more substantial. I think if I put the drawbar between my lift arms and atttach the plow to it I can raise it and lower it with my lift arms. The only draw back is the draw bar will rotate as the plow is lifted. I will have to come up with a way to keep the draw bar stationary. I remember seeing a post where some one made something for this purpose so thay could pull a trailer around with their draw bar.
Thanks for the great responses and help.

Remember the flip over factor when putting a drawbar on your 3P lift arms?
