2016 Kubota L3901 HST with LA-525 front loader
Hi folks,
Sorry to bother you with a trivial question like this, but I don't have my tractor nearby and my wife's on a trip to town, so I thought I'd ask the following question to see if anyone knew it off the top of their head: For the Kubota L3240 (other L-series tractors are probably the same, I'm guessing), there is a square breather plug in the vicinity of the front axle, and this plug should come off when greasing the front axle housing; what's the size of the 8-point socket required? I know it's probably metric. Also, does anyone know which of the national-chain stores (Lowes, Home Depot, Pep Boys, etc.) carries 8-point sockets? Thank you...

If it is the plug I am thinking about,I just use an 8mm open ended wrench to remove it.

Just use the nearest size open end wrench (imperial or metric), or a cresent wrench. No need to get it super tight. I have a whole socket rail of 8 pointers, so I never pay attention to size, just grab the one I need. You have now come across one of my complaints, and probably your next question. The front grease point has a plug to remove to pump in new grease on opposite side. The rear does not have this plug, only a zerk. The rear zerk will provide lots of resistance when pumping. I just pump a few times and forget about it. I have showed this to and asked Kubota reps at national farm shows and never gotten a good response on why it is like this. Philip.

I've ran into two of those on a L3010 and a L3540 that had never been removed before. It's a 7mm square pipe plug head. They were too tight for a 7mm open head wrench to remove-the wrench jaws wanted to spread.I had to use 4 inch vise grips to loosen the plug with care and reinstall with the 7mm wrench not as tight.A 7mm 4 or 8 point socket is not a common item and would most likely need to be purchased from a mobile tool distributor like Mac or (gast!)Snap-On. Good Luck!
