Trying to find out a good direct drive/axial piston hydraulic motor for a heavy duty brush cutter. I have already built one using motor connected to gearbox. Naturally, no manufacturer wants to share this info. I have a bush hog 672 that Id like to put a direct drive motor on. Anyone got some ideas? Hi speed hi torque. 20-30 gpm flow. like the setup in attached photo...

I am assuming you looked at the price of the skidsteer.

Just a plain hyd motor with the cu in displacement to provide enough torque will run too slow.

If you look close, that motor is connected to a planetary gear assembly.

It also has a case grain.

That is to up the speed.

A 30 cu in hyd motor using 30 GPM will run at 231 rpm and produce about 14324 in lbs of torque working at 3000 psi.

If you feed that into a gear box, you have to work out the blade rpm and you will also lose some torque.

Any tips to create a comparable unit? The excavator cutter you helped me with works great! Now working on a heavy duty skidsteer unit..

Tell us what the gear box ratio is and we can compute the blade speed and torque.

It would take about 52 HP to drive that motor to full capacity.

I don't want to use a gearbox. Just like the direct drive in pics

That is a gear box in the picture.

My educated guess says gearbox.

I could be wrong.

They are running through a standard gearbox.

On our Power-Trac's brush cutter, they use a direct drive hyd motor.

I believe they use a 3 cu in hyd motor to turn the blades.

The PTO GPM is about 8 GPM, so the speed would be about 616 rpm for blade speed.

A gear box can increase the speed or increase the torque.

The X-treme Brush Cutter does use a piston direct drive hyd motor.

This is a piston hyd motor, and you can bet that they are not cheap.

Eaton - Hydraulics - Motors - Piston Motors - Heavy Duty Piston Motors

3.3in3/rev to 7.6in3/rev, Max speeds to 4500 rpm, Max pressure to 6000 psi.

Here is a small piston hyd motor.
