Hello i got a question about how to replace the wheel studs off from a skidsteer? I had wheel spaces on the hubs to make it so i could use the over the wheel type steel tracks and yesterday i was watching my wife drive it and noticed alot of play in the back wheel. So i took of the wheel and found that 7 out of the 8 studs that hold the spacer to the hub were broke off?? Dont really know how that happened just put new tires on 25 hours ago and checked to make sure all the inner nuts were tight and they were but anywho how do u get the old studs out and where do i get new ones to put in? thanks for all the info in advance dont post much but read all the time.

You need to press them out and press the new ones in and these can be bought at the skidsteer store, you din't state what kind you have. Seeing that its orange, I would guess you have a Bobcat.

How hard is it to get the hub off and to a hydraulic press?

I would suspect the studs broke as the nuts were not fully tightened with the wheels off the ground. This may allow you to tighten the nuts but they have not centered and seated properly allowing movement when turning.

Check the rest of your wheels.

On semi trucks and trailers we use a hammer.

OK, it's a big hammer. But a hammer none-the-less.

Just support it well on the back side, close to the hole/head. I use a large socket.

Will has it right large hammer and pin to drive the old studs out then start the new ones with a hammer and make a spacer to pull the new ones in with the nuts put lots of them in in different machines that way

I had several on my 863 that wouldn't stay tight so I picked up 16 studs at the Bobcat place. Take the wheel off and whack the ends of the studs with a 4 lb hammer and they will pop out. If broken off flous , which 4 of mine were, just use a punch and hit it with the same 4 lb hammer. Stick the new studs in from the backside and re install the wheels and tighten the lugs , it will pull them in place. Later, Nat

Thanks guys I was hoping that I would just be able to pound them out but I didn’t want to damage the bearings and such that’s why I asked you guys. I did cut and wedge pieces of wood behind the hub so it wouldn’t put so much strain on the bearings and tried to pound them out. I couldn’t get a hard enough swing without worrying about taking the hand of the guy helping me holding the vise grips holding the punch that I was using to push on the seven that were broken flush. To make a long story short I ended up drilling a 3/8 hole in the center of all the studs and putting a 1/4 drive extension in the hole and then pounding off from that. That worked and I got them all out. Took about 2 hours but its alot easier then it could have been if I would have had to take the hub off. Thanks for all the help.

Ok guys i finally took ther time today to try to get the studs back in, I tries using my 1/2 impact gun to "pull" them in but it onlt got them in about 1/2 way. Do i just need to get a bigger impact gun to pull them the rest of the way or will that ju twist the new studs off? I tried takin a c clamp and puh them in with that bt that didint work either. A budy of mine has a porta power kit but there wasnt enough room to use that. Any sugestions besides removing the hub and getting them pressed in somewhere? Thanks

I hope you lined up the spline shaft before you did any of that and we have no idea how strong your 1/2 impact is?
