Need a little help...what do you think?
Have started a posthole buis. part time and presently have a L3000DT with a Danuser digger on back. Also have a hydraulic downforce to add weight or force when digging. In Barrie, Ont there are a lot of rocks from fist size to soccerball size that I've encountered. What would dig faster or better...a skidster or my tractor. When it's just dirt or clay I have no problem digging my holes, but is there an advantage to digging with a skidster ( Bobcat ). Please help.....

how about an articulated tractor like i have. we do allot of fencing and i leave my danhuser w/ downpressure kit at home these days and do everything with my power trac 425.

please do a search on power trac and post hole digger on this site you will find most of your answers and some good technics right here.

good luck

I have used both. For your situation, I would go with the skidsteer. Superior manuverabilty with the skidsteer, able to exert significantly more down force, and the hydraulic digger with its ability to reverse itself will significantly help with rocks or tree roots. In fact, I can't think of a situation when I would prefer a rear mounted posthole digger over a skidsteer mounted one. I have also tamped in many post holes and you should also consider a hydraulic tamper. This could run off of either your tractor or skidsteer hydraulics. It will significantly speed up your time with less labor. A company I have looked at is Fairmont hydraulic tools. Check out their web site.

I can't imagine doing with three point pto auger what I do with my little pictures here you will see there is almost nothing you cannot do with your skid steer if you really want to. I wonder day and night how I got by without mine all these years.

Hans is right!

Don't even think about making a decision until you have checked out the Power-trac line. I have a 45hp version that is awesome!. American made...near bullet-proof, totally logical design, see more at www.power-trac.com. E-mail me is you want to know more.

Go with the skidsteer. You have superior movement over a tractor, much easier to dig with, one person operation, all the down pressure you could want, and a much better digger as well.

I'll second what cowboydoc replied.

I've owned both a Bobcat 453 and now own a Kubota BX22. I would say the Bobcat (hydraulic) was much better at digging post holes, especially when it's rocky.

Obviously, the larger the machine and the most hydraulic flow works the easiest.

I can also say that the Bobcat really damages turf when you turn. This was problematic for me because I always ripped up the yard when I was digging for fences.

Just my 2 cents!

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=powertrac&Number=117666&Search=true&Forum=powertrac&Words=post%20hole%20hour&Match=And&Searchpage=0&Limit=50&Old=allposts&Main=117666> Read this post on Power Trac post hole augers </A> You will be impressed. Also, the power trac will not tear up the lawn due to its hydraulic articulation.
