Hello all,

Fairly new Kubota owner here, and complete newbie in plowing.

I have access to a single bottom plow, an old Skjold that was pulled by an old Ford 8N. Knowing very little about how a plow works, I am wondering if it is worth the time to mess around with attaching it.

Both, of course, have a Category 1 hitch, so I am hopeful. The plow is a bit rusty, but all the parts that are supposed to move indeed do move.

I also have access to a drawbar, but not sure if that makes any difference.

Again, I have a Kubota B7800.

Thanks for any wisdom.

A plow's a pretty simple piece of machinery. If it's all there, it'll work just fine. Any rust will be gone in a matter of minutes.

As you can see here, the 7800 can get the job done.

Beautiful, Leejohn ! Very inspiring.

I finally figured out how to measure the plowshare, and I think it must be a beast. Does 20" sound right? This was used in deep muck, a former swamp turned vegie-growing heaven. My soil isn't quite so nice....

I'm sorta freaked out about attaching this, because videos I've watched show a lot of adjustments, and I'm leery that I won't be able to get the 3 point hitch back to the right configuration for my tiller.

I told you I was a newbie !!

I don't think my 7800 would pull a 20", that is one big plow. The ones in the picture are two 12". When comes to measuring a plow not everymany people know how. I went around here and asked about 20 guys and you know what, no one had it right. Also the people I asked had something to do with farming. They just don't use them anymore and haven't for awhile. Your 20" doesn't sound right.

20" is what you measure as the perpendicular distance (left to right) from beam center to beam center?

Yes, see, there's the rub. It's a single bottom plow, so I can't measure the beams. I have to measure the plowshare itself, and I've found lots of descriptions, but only one photo that shows how to do it. If I do it the same way as the photo, I get 20", but that seems way too big. On the other hand, looking at other plow photos, mine is pretty big.

This link to a forum (the "other guys") shows a photo of how to measure a single bottom: http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=114523&page=2 . You have to scroll down a bit.

I'll go take some photos of mine and upload them in a minute....

I measured mine from landside to landside, which is easy enough if you have a 2-bottom.. even if it was a 20", which would be unusual, if the 8N pulled it with 2wd, your B7800 should do no worse in 4wd.

OK, here are some photos of my plow. If they stay in the same order, photo #1 is the WRONG way to measure--that's about 27 inches.

Photo #2 measures the width of the plowshare, parallel to the cutting edge, and it's showing about 20 inches.

Photo #3 measures the width of the moldboard, which is about 14".

Like I say, don't know much about plows, but that share looks huge, and not sure it's supposed to be extending beyond the moldboard like that, but that's how it came.

Forget Pictures 1 and 3. #2 is right, but put you tape under the plow hook the point on the left. Then check what it is on the right at the stright edge that has the tail on it. When you drop the plow in the ground it well cut a 20" ditch if it's 20". By #2 picture the way your holding the tape it looks like it might only be a 16"
