Well, would never thought it would happen. Yesterday afternoon, my wife was working at home with the back door open so our kitten could come in and out. She looks up from her desk in the study to see the kitten and a skunk in the study with her. The sleeping lab, which both the skunk and kitten walked by, woke up saw the skunk and lunged. He got blasted right in the face. She got the dog into the garage. The skunk walked about the house for a while until our large male barn cat cruised into the house saw the skunk and turned around and walked out. Luckily the skunk followed him out. They both stood on the porch for a while until the skunk decided to head out. The cat jumped into the lawn chair and went to sleep. I think my cats and the skunk are buddies. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

So what can I do to get the smell out of the house??

We have used the baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, dove solution on the dog and the carpet. This has gotten 95% of the smell. But there is still that faint smell.

We have turned off the heat so as not to circulate the oder, should I leave it off for as long as we can?

Can carpet cleaners come in and deoderize the carpet, will the carpet in the whole house need it.?

Will spreading baking soda on the carpet help?

Any success stories out there?

Thanks

Let me get this straight. . . YOU never actually saw the skunk. So we are dealing with "hearsay" evidence.

First, check to see if your M-I-L moved in without you knowing. If not her, has any politician been sighted in the neighborhood by anyone? It could be that the smell isn't really the type of skunk that has black fur and white stripes.

Just like the cartoon.... Pepe Lapoo!! (spelling?) I would call a restoration service..... the kind that do fire or flood cleanup..
It will take about a year the way it is.. I don't know if pros have a better way or not.........You could google it.......

You might want to check out Myth Busters on the Discovery Channel website. I saw an episode where they got sprayed by a skunk and were trying to get rid of the smell using common myths such as tomato juice and other items. I forget what they used but it did get most of the smell out.

Go for the professional service. They have ionizer machines that will remove the smell.

I agree with Phil. And if you check your homeowners insurance may cover it. If you personally do it you may find 6 months from now the smell coming back. Service Masters or equivalant may be your best choice.

Sounds like it's time for an extended holiday, a new wardrobe and of course having the interior redecorated! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A few years ago my boxer got nailed square in the face, came running in just dripping of the stuff. And of course as soon as he ran in the door started to shake it off. I was 15 F out and falling, I could not leave him outside. So in the tub he went. The house stunk so bad. I was covered and so was most of the bathroom.

I ended up finding the baking soda mix worked real well. But there were things that still had the "odor"! What I did find helped some things was Brake Part cleaner. I think it brakes down the oil and lets it wash out. This would not work for something large like a carpet, but it did work on my boots and a bunch of other small objects.

I think calling the insurance company and replacing the carpet is going to be your best bet.

Good luck

Gary
