No sleep for me. lastnight about midnight my poor little pooch GiGi got mixed up with a skunk. Never been this close to a skunk incident before and hope I never will again. Most gaud awful smell in the world, it's bad enough to get a whiff of skunk in the air but this is indescribably sickening.

I was crashed on the couch oblivious to anything, Pat let her out so she could do her stuff before retiring for the night and the darn skunk was in the front yard. After the skunk did it's thing Pat made the mistake of letting Gigi back in the house so she could bathe her in the tub. Talk about a wake up call....

Of course Gigi was rubbing on the carpet all the way to the bathroom so now we not only have a dog to deodorize but I can't stand to be in the house. Am out in the shop and it isn't too bad but that smell seems to sick to everything.

We bathed Gigi with the mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, read about on this forum, thanks to whoever posted that. Going to let the house air out for a few hours before attempting to do anything with the carpet.. At least here in the shop I have stuff I can work on and a computer with internet access..

Gaud it stinks around here

Bob, my dog got it this spring. Skunk in neighbors yard....... dog ran after it like he would do chasing a cat. That skunk waited till my dog nose was right up his rear when he let him have it !!!! My poor dog....... shaking his head, drooling everywhere, got it up his nose , in his mouth..... everywhere. Months later...... he still stunk when he got wet. I totally sympathize with you. I hope my dog learned something from the experience, but.........

Thanks for the comfort guys, still out in the shop. Tried going in the house a few minutes ago and ended up back out on the front porch throwing up (literally). Pat's in the house asleep, don't know how she can stand it. This has to be one of the worst experiences in my life but I still love the dog and wouldn't move back into town.

When Pat gets around we will go to Wall-mart and pickup a couple gallons of hydrogen peroxide more baking soda and lemons.. One of my model airplane buddies is going to bring over a live trap and a cot later today. I will be sleeping in the shop for a while and if I get lucky enough to trap the stinky devil I have a Browning that will dispatch him into never never land.

Bob, you have my sympathy. I've been fortunate enough to never have to try it, but I've read that Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover really works better than other methods. Some other places besides PetSmart also have it. Good luck.

I have heard of people having skunks take up residence in a crawl space , or porch underneath a house and they set traps to catch them - what do you do after you catch em?? Anybody know?

Don't have an answer but my plan is to sneak up and shoot him in the head with my 9mm while he is still in the trap.

Try washing the dog in tomato juice, also, "pat" the carpet (don't rub or scrub) with tomato juice.

Mythbusters just did a show yesterday on removing skunk smell... baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice worked. Tomato juice "busted".

I don't know why dullpain removed his post and question about what to do if you catch one in the trap, but anyway . . .. Many years ago, the City of Dallas had traps that you could go "borrow". You go get the trap, bait, and set it, and when you caught something, you called the city animal shelter and they'd come get it. I think I caught 3 skunks that way, baiting the trap each time with sardines. The animal shelter guy had a solid metal box just slightly bigger than the trap, and the traps were solid sides, top, and bottom; but not the ends. So you could see through the end, from some distance, to tell when you had caught something. But the animal control guy would approach carefully from the side, lift the trap, set it into the box and close the airtight lid. There was then a small pipe in the lid of the box with a cap on it. He'd remove the cap, pour in the ether, and cap it. By the time he got back to the animal shelter, the caught animal was dead.
