I an planning to add a thumb on B2630 FEL and would like to add a diverter or selector valve to the FEL control so I can switch between rolling the bucket and pinching the thumb. I found these two valves and I know very little about hydraulics but I think only the one (1782)will work. Would adding another spool be cheaper/beter?Advise? comments?

WCH,
That is what I was thinking as it defaults to one set rather than needing power to select one.

Does adding on another control valve make any sense?

Sure it makes sense - I have the Gresen Diverter valve as do some other guys on the site. Included some pics - I am setting mine up to run a grapple - what kind of thumb are you talking about on the FEL? Anyway, without power the FEL works the same as always - with power from the switch on my joystick (OTTO electronics makes the handle) you divert the curl / dump function to open / close on the grapple.

Good Luck,
Brad

I have the Gresson (1782) also on my FEL. It would do the job quite well for you.

I am going to get "The Thumb" by The Thumb it looks like the best of quality/features for the price. I looked at cheaper ones and yea they would probably do the job but...

I have a brush rake built for my bucket so should I get a longer thumb or one that is the same lenght as my bucket from top to bottom (24")?

Lincolnvt, thanks for the pics always helps to see one installed, and the tip on the switch.

Valve 1782 spec says 8gpm. What happens if you're using a pump that delivers 12 or 15 gpm? Would it just restrict the flow to 8 gpm or would it hurt the valve?

Wedge,
My understanding is the valve will restrict the flow - you want the flow of the valve to match / exceed your pump flow otherwise you are bottlenecking the system. I don't know about damage to the valve - maybe Kenny or somebody else can chime in.

Cheers,
Brad

"Technically" you would want any new valve or diverter placed into the system to be rated at or higher that the pump's rated GPM...BUT, if used on the FEL for a grapple, I think you would be OK because you are not flowing constant flow to the cylinders. Now if you are adding a new valve via a power beyond connection that has the full rated flow going through it constantly than you MUST meet or exceed the rated GPM requirement

Kennyd,
My tractor is 9.8 gpm so if I understand what you're saying I should be ok with the 8 gpm diverter valve.
