Sled vs. trailer for downhill wood hauling

Just drag the darned log down the hill.:D :D :D

Or maybe two or three of them on the same choker!:D :D :D

Lowering the bucket on the tractor has a tendency to stop it rather quickly!:D :D

Tom,

In my opinion, you need to do 3 things right away. No messing around!

1) widen out your rear wheels to the maximum they will go for stability
2) fill the rear wheels with fluid for stability
3) triple your life insurance

(If you don't do #1&#2, then 10x it. You're widow will be thankful. Look up logging deaths ....)

If you want to get the wood down, use a 3pt mounted box or a 5x10' trailer with electric brakes and add a brake controller on the tractor so you can control the load.

Now you more experienced guys may want to correct me, but I think the solution lies in one of the implements Tom already has.

I would build a container which fit on top of the box blade, which Tom calls a box scraper. Going down the hill with the box blade plus a load of wood on top of it would counterbalance the weight of wood in the FEL, plus if things got out of control, dropping the box blade would slow the tractor down considerably, especially with a load of wood on top of it for extra weight.

Because this would add drag at the rear of the tractor, it would increase stability going downhill.

Take it real slow, and don't even think about trying to get wood off the hill until you have well over 100 hours of seat time. Practice with the box blade to get a feel for what it does.

How about putting electric brakes on your trailer? Mount the controller on the tractor and let the trailer slow you down...

A good consensus is starting to develop here, and a bunch of good ideas. Guys, I really can't say how much I appreciate it. Gotta do an on-line safety course (OSHA-10) today, so I have to run, but geeze, thanks so much!

I'll try to get pics up this evening.

Great thread with lots of good info.

I too am faced with skidding logs on some steep ground, and am concerned about the back end of a log rolling off to the side of the tractor on off camber sections of skid route

Are 'bumpers' the best solution?

Passed the course... About half sick of looking at computers! But I promised pics so here is the best one I could find. I know I've taken more...

Anyway, my skidding or trailering or sledding would be downhill across the picture, about where that butternut log is laying - getting that beauty down with only dollys and a rope haul was a riot... We did cut it into 2 big pieces and one small, but it's 22" in diameter, and 10' of that is no joke. Made some beautiful lumber, though.

It's actually just a little steeper up above, and to the right of the picture you can see the final slope down into my yard is a little steeper as well. But mosyt of it is in more or less of a trough. The house is situated in the cut off to the right, so the consequences of something getting away from me involve "all of the above" -my life, my tractor, our home!

The place I've been working in is down to the right, not visible in this pic, and mostly not as steep.

And 1bush2hog, welcome to the thread! That's a fantastic avatar. I too have often come upon helpful threads, glad this one has helped you. Be careful! I like the idea of "bumpers," let's see what the others think.

john_bud, I already have the rears swapped for a wider stance - should I (could I) get them any wider? Do they make spacers, or something?

I'm figuring on antifreeze wheel fill, should I consider wheel weights as well? I imagine there's a point of diminishing return.. I probably better trundle off to check other threads, I'm kinda taking us of-course here...

But thanks all, this thread's a "keeper!"
