Sledding Anyone?

Yep, looks like fun but, there ain't no way I'm going out there. Found out that I'm allergic to those four letter words.

SNOW and COLD are both four letter words ya know.

It was about 1954 (give or take a year) that Marlow, OK, had an unusual snow one night and early the next morning our scout leader (I was a boy scout at the time) got the local lumber yard to build us a sled that 3 or 4 of us at a time could ride on, towed on city residential streets by the scout leader behind his car with chains on the rear wheels. Asphalt streets, no curbs, but did have borrow ditches. We just had a great time that day on that sled. At times, especially going around corners a little too fast the sled would slide off the street into a ditch and dump all who were on it. It was my one and only experience with a real sled and it was great. But can you imagine a scout leader doing something like that today? He'd probably be arrested.

Wow, I'm 56. I haven't been sledding in, oh, about 2 years! :laughing: We didn't have enough snow last year at the right time. I try and go at least once per year. But it seems each year, sitting on that plastic sheet, sliding down the hill, I can feel each bump a little harder in my spine. But I still do it. I love it. Great fun!!!

We had a blizzard back in the 70's. After about 4 days trapped in the neighborhoods, we got out to the main road. We were pulling a sled to the grocery store, me and a couple friends. A city truck with the racks for the oil pot lamps came by and asked if we wanted a tow? Sure! We tied on the back and he took us a couple miles down the road.

Many times in winter, we'd hop cars. It was quite common. You just hang around a stop sign and when a car would stop, you'd run up behind it, duck down, and grab the rear bumper. Then you'd ski on your shoes as far as you could. Some people didn't care. Some would floor it. Some would swerve all over. And some would stop, get out and threaten to beat you! :laughing: It was all fun and games until you came upon a dry spot, your shoes would grab the pavement, and you'd go face first into the street.
