Slip clutch maintainance

As Wen said, oil just messes them up. I find that keeping them dry is all they usually need, but if they get wet, you have to disassemble them and wire-brush everything to get them good and clean again.

How about the type of silicone used in (fan) belt dressing spray? Could that protect without messing up the COF of the clutch plates? Also, if anything wouldn't the clutch safely if annoyingly let go more quickly, not a safety problem?

As you can imagine, I use a lot of silicone related stuff around here.

I hate rust.

Silicone is used in lots of products, but I would not use it on a slip clutch plate disk. Keep the clutches indoors or covered and spin them loosely a couple of times a year and they will serve you well.

Silicone has some really nasty habits and is prohibited for many uses because the silicone migrates to areas where it was not intended to be used. This is particularly true in electronic assemblies. It then becomes impossible to get a good solder connection on the board or component and silicone is very difficult to clean off completely.

The worse problem with slipclutches is seldom mentioned in that when you loosen the bolts to let the clutch spin, it is rusted so well that the clutch plate material dissengrates and has to be replaced. That is why it needs to be done regularly.
