Rotary Cutter Slip Clutch with independent PTO?

I'm new to owning a tractor and my 2005 New Holland TC48DA(which I really like so far) has an independent PTO. The only PTO attachment I am using currently is a 6' Bush Hog. Is there any reason for me to put a slip clutch on the PTO shaft? Thanks!

There are lots of good reasons to do it;
and no good reason not to do it.

It is an insurance policy for the tractor and the second line of defense after the shear pin if it has one at the base of the blade hanger.

My brothers hog does not have any shear protection that I know of other than the key stock in the gearbox.


The blade hangers are set to be pushed back if it impacts and object

Remember the shaft ends may not/do not have shear pins and the PTO shaft is used to transmit power to an implement.



You must also remember that the PTO stub is always spinning if it is a live independent PTO and you should purchase a shaft cover that will prevent any posssible contact if one was not provided with the tractor as it should have been.

Either should have a slip clutch or shear bolt protection. Much less expensive than replacing gears in the cutter gear box or gears in the tranny of the NH.

Brush hogs go places that are over grown... you can not always see rocks and stumps very well. The slip clutch helps dampen the blow of an object (IF it's set correctly!)... but if you are just cutting your own pasture and you have cut it several times before... (no objects to worry about), you could get away without buying one. The mower should at the very least have a shear pin.

the limited slip clutch.

My brothers squealer has a limited slip clutch
PTO shaft as standard equipment, so I doubt
it has a shear bolt or pin.

Apples and oranges Peter. The fact you have an independent PTO is completely unrelated to driveline protection. I think you may have confused this with the over-running clutch discussions.

Whether by shear bolt or by slip clutch, any tractor should have driveline protection from a rotary cutter. Under 6' I'd say it's dealer's choice. 6' and over, slip clutches are probably the better bet.

It depends if it's a new or used mower... it's possible that the slip clutch could have been removed for use on something else and a different pto shaft put on, just to sell it. It needs to be checked out.

Bottom line is you need either a shear pin or slip clutch on your rotary cutter. If properly maintained, I can see no advantage to having redundancy.
