Slip Scoop

I've got a few yards of loam and crushed stone to move around the yard and would like to buy a medium duty 3ph scoop to move it. The tractor is quite small, Ford 1200, so I'd want a small size scoop. I checked with a couple local tractor dealers and they don't sell them. One had never heard of such a thing. Northern Tool sells them for $275.00 with shipping. Not a bad price if it's more than a tin can. Does anyone have any experience ordering from Northern Tool or other places that sell and ship. Shipping to Maine will cost about as much as the scoop. Those things must weigh 150#- 200# or so.

Here's a discussion from a couple of years back. I think the Northern scoops are made by Howse, and are a little lighter than the KK scoops you can get through Tractor Supply (if you have access to TSC).

Bill, I'll check the sites you provided. There isn't a TSC in the area so ordering and having it shipped is my only option.

I bought a 3PH scoop for my Ford 1210 several years ago when I had to move a lot of topsoil and fill in along a new driveway. I forget the price, but it was inexpensive (at Central Tractor).The Ford handled it OK, but it was possible to do "wheelies" if I got too much dirt in the scoop. This was with two front suitcase weights in place..................chim

I have the max suggested 3 weights up front, I will add more if needed and I think it will be needed. Would you think the 24in is best for the 1200? The prices are ok but I would like to find a local supply but living in Maine it's not likely.

Do you still use the 1210? Is that the 3cyl with power steering, what about a fel. Any problem with parts? I bought mine for mowing but have also pulled up some good sized rocks and mid sized logs for fire wood.

I bought a 24" scoop from Nothern Tool. I use it behind a JD 445 garden tractor/lawnmower. I changed the pins to cat. O. I'm amazed at how well it worked, especially behind such a small machine. My only concern was the height of the 3 point hitch above the ground. If I shortend the adjustment for the lift arms there was just enough height to dump the scoop. It was a stronger box than I expected. I picked it up at a Northern Tool store and saved the shipping cost. It does appear to be the same as the Howse scoop.

I don't remember the size I bought (and I have it stored in my Mom-in-law's barn). If I recall, it was around $250 at CT about 6 years ago. It was a pretty handy item. I dug a swale along the one side of my property with it. The project took a while, but it was fun. Varying the length of the toplink easily changes the angle to make it more or less aggressive-cutting. I bought my 1210 used, and 2 weights were what came with it. For everything but the scoop, 2 are enough.

My 1210 is is 4WD/HST 3-cylinder 16HP diesel and lacks loader and power steering. I still have the 1210, although the original plan was to sell it about 2-1/2 years ago when I bought the B7500HST w/ FEL. I mow about 7 acres, so both the Ford and Kubota have 5' RFM's. I keep the Ford on site where I mow about 5 of those acres, and drive the Kubota there so #3 Son and I can double-team it. He calls the Ford a "dinosaur" and much prefers the B7500 with power steering.

Parts have never been a problem. When I painted it a couple years ago, I replaced some steering parts and controls decals. The nearby Ford dealer has some parts in stock, and can get whatever else is needed in a couple days.

I read the old discussion that Bill linked for me and it seems like everybody that has used a scoop had a good experience with it no matter the brand.
I'll order one tonight. But I still hate to pay $95 for shipping.

If it's being shipped freight, you can have it delivered to any business address and the shipping will be considerably cheaper. I have stuff shipped to a friends dog grooming shop and she calls me when it's in. Works pretty well.

Also, if you ask, you may find that you can pick it up at the Depot and save some money that way.

If harbor freight won't work this kind of deal, you might find that others will. The lowest price isn't always the lowest cost.
