The way people drive like idiots in the area I live just has to be addressed. Here is an article on an accident that happened in a contruction zone. One of the workers was hit, another worker went to help her and got hit and then another car plowed into the hole mess. This all happened at 5:30 in the morning there is no reason other than just driving too D*mn fast and not paying attention. No excuse at all for this kind of crap happening, especially to someone working on the roads, trying to make a decent living and now her family is without a mother because someone was paying more attention to anything else and not the road. A vehicle is a killing machine in the wrong hands and people need to realize that and pay attention and be more careful.

On top of everything, I'm a firm believer that cars and trucks should not be used as a phone booth!

Very sad to hear.

Pennsylvania is cracking down on this.
Speeding fines are doubled in work areas.
Drivers must have their headlights on (and not just running lights... unless you engage the lights whereby your taillights are on it doesn't count).
If you do hurt or kill a worker, I believe they're also requiring mandatory jail time.

yes I wanted to say that was probably the cause behind the accident but I wouldn't want to falsely acuse anyone. If they were talking on the phoen and that was the cause they will have to live with knowing the fact that thier phone call wa smore important than a human life. I wasn't there and do not know for sure that was the issue so I didn't say that. But I 100% agree with you that way too many people use there car not only as a phone booth but as a mobile office. Reading the paper taking calls, I have actually seen people with a phone to their ear taking a memo while attempting to drive

On the phone, taking a memo, that is nothing. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was on a state highway heading home a couple of weeks ago and doing my usuall put put 55 mph with the cruise control set. The road is a divided four lane with a handfull of lights every once in awhile. I drive 55mph since that is the limit, the section of road is heavily patroled and unless you drive 65-70 the next traffic light will get you. People pass me all the time but then I catch up to them at the light and pass them since the red light turns green for me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So I was put puting along when a lady drives past me doing about 65. Nothing unusual about that except that I could have sworn she was reading a book!
/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I caught up with her at the light, red for her, green for me, /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, and sure enough she was reading a book while driving down the road! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I was most happy when she took turn and got off the road.

I have seen people reading books/magazines, putting on makeup, and my all time favorite eating cereal out of a bowl. WITH milk. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

These people are nuts....

I stay on back roads as much as possible...

Dan

Everyone needs to be reminded to be careful in work zones. Those workers certainly don't need to have added dangers to an already dangerous job.

In Illinois, fines double and there is a huge fine and mandatory jail sentence if you hit a worker. But just last year there was an accident near our place where a driver ran into a work zone and killed 2 people.

And yes, cell phones are a real problem, but so are others not paying attention for others reasons as noted.

Thanks for reminding us.

I don't think I've seen anyone reading a book yet, but every morning, I see women driving during rush hour traffic, putting their makeup on, fixing their hair, or talking on cell phones.

I've seen the reading a book thing, twice. Lots of other activities that are dangerous as well.
I feel bad for the people who HAVE to be in harms way, and so many dumb people out there who don't take a moment to think of their welfare.

The only deterrent to people doing such things as reading, putting on makeup, eating, drinking, or other such activities while driving is to ticket them and when found guilty, fine them heavily and mandatory jail time, even if it is just for 5 or six weekends. Make them work during that "jail" time cleaning up the sides of the roads, etc. Let them get a feel for what a car going at the speed limit is like when they are standing 5 feet from the curb of that car doing 55 MPH. We put people in jail for having a few ounces of marijuana, but excuse people that hold 2 - 3 ton weapons in there hands while on a cell phone, putting on makeup, drinking alcohol or soda, etc. at highway speeds. Who is the greater threat to public safety???
