Is Pluging a tire acceptable? NOT

Around here, all tire shops patch a tire not plug it.

They remove the tire from the rim and install a rubber patch on the inside of the tire. Similar to a tube patch. Using this method its a frosty Friday in hell before it ever leaks again.
When you plug a tire you actually have to make the hole bigger. Also there is no way of know where the seal point is. If its at the inside surface its ok. If its the outside surface then you run the risk of tread separation as the air pressure migrates into the unsealed hole.

Say no to plugs.

Like Glenn said, you paid for new, so you are entitled to new. However, if it doesn't bother you then you could settle for a replug (I'm actually not sure that can really be done), but definitely get some good will credit in exchange. They clearly owe you on this one.

If it were me, I'd go for the new tire, partly on principle, but also to test how they stand behind their product. Delivering a "new" machine with not only a used tire, but one that's been puctured and repaired, really calls into question the dealers practices. They should fall all over themselves appologizing for such a hideous error on their part. You can then decide if you really want the new tire or credit against their conscience. If they give you a hard time, then I think you've uncovered a rat.

Oh for crying out loud. If it was plugged, somebody just ran over a nail or something. Sheesh. It could happen to anybody almost anytime. Sure, the plug was a cheap way out, probably should have patched it. Still can.

As long as the cords are not ripped, that tire is still as good as new. If you want insurance, patch it, and put in a tube.

I've driven plugged tires on a car for 40K miles.

Go ask any tire shop for literature on plugs. Plugs are known to blow out. Think of being on a slope with your tractor and having a blow out. I had trailer tire recently go doing 45 mph on a state highway and it's amazing I didn't wreck and I thankful no traffic was close becuse I was on both lanes trying to contol the trailer with my full size pickup.

Dealer said he would put a patch in it "free of charge." I chuckled when he said that - I mean "free of charge", duh! I understand that a patch is just about as good as a new tire. I suppose I could have put up more of a fuss to get a new one, but arguing on the basis of principle alone does not interest me. IMO, tire fixed good as new = problem solved.

Let the bad boys deal with the principals.
Good use of common sense.

Please re-read what I posted: I said "patch it and put in a tube".

I'm just trying to point out that a simple (no torn cord) hole in a tire is relatively common, minor occurance. It can be repaired simply and inexpensively. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Perhaps the dealer was in a hurry (or whatever). I don't see this as a federal case.
