I just read this post just now. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Board/cubcadet/Number/879240/page/0/view/collapsed/sb/5/fpart/2/vc/1/o/all

I too noticed that reverse is extreamly slow, mine maybe slower than the 3.5 post speed in the specifications. But the good news is that I think there must be an adjustment for the reverse pedal.

I accidentaly 2 days ago when mowing pulled back on the forward pedal and wow it back up rather fast /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I haven't had the time to pull it out of the shed and into the garage too see if there is any adjustment on the reverse pedal or not but seems like there must be. If not I will pull back on the forward to get the "full speed out of her scotty" /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yes there is a simple linkage between the forward pedal and the reverse pedal that can be adjusted. My tractor goes fast in reverse now. I still have a little more adjustment I want to do with it. I think I have them too close now since when I push down on the reverse if my foot is too far up the forward pedal comes down on my foot. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I will assume that if you speed up the reverse ; you loose forward speed and vice versus.

Like dqdave says, what ever you gain in reverse, you will loose in forward speed. It's a 50/50 split. If you go 60% for reverse, you'll only get 40% out of forward, etc.. Gotta find the happy spot.

Stevebig,
Mine was the same, it would barely back up on level ground and even a small incline would stop it from moving at all. Shortening the rod length between the pedals gave me more go in reverse, but at the expense of some forward speed. I'm curious to try the "lift the forward pedal" method to reverse faster. Maybe that will be a better way to get more power in both directions instead of sacrificing speed in both. If it works better I may just remove the reverse pedal and get used to lifting the pedal to back up.
I'll bet that some modification could be made to the existing linkage to make it more usable in both forward and reverse. Making an actuator with a longer arm/longer throw could do it - I'll have to take a closer look. In the meantime, adjusting the linkage is the easiest answer.

I'm not sure if I lost much in the forward direction, but it did get harder to push it down to get all the speed out of it. So yes I think you will have to play with which one you like better go fast forward or reverse. I don't necessary need to go the full 5.5 mph when mowing grass, so I will fine tune it in to what I like.

As for a foot pedal I personally liked the all in one pedal on the 1554 better than having the 2. Having one of those would be a good answer to taking off the reverse pedal, if it would work.

Well, after some fiddling around I found the "lift the pedal" for reverse method isn't a practical way to go. The force required to do it that way is just too much for everyday use so I guess the only answer for now is to try and find an adjustment that is a good compromise. Moving the adjustment only 3/16" made a big difference. The only other possibility I see is to fabricate a longer pivot of the pedal, giving the rod a longer throw when you press it down.

One last post on this slow transmission in reverse.

I did re-adjust the reverse and the forward to maximumize speeds in both directions.

What you need to do is lossen up the the bolts that attached the reverse pedal to the forward pedal. Push down on the forward pedal all the way down. While the pedal is down push the reverse pedal up as far as it will go and tighten the bolts back up. After they are tightened up, the reverse pedal when pushed down seemed to pull the forward pedal back to where it maxed out the travel. Plus the forward speeds seemed to work fine with no effert to push it all the way down.

My guess is that maybe CC did not tight them up properly and the reverse pedal slipped.

After doing this adjustment my tractor went fast in both directions. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks, Steve. I'll have to try that tonight when I get home. I've adjusted the linkage bit-by-bit trying to find the best compromise but it appears you found a good way to gauge where the adjustment should be to maximize the travel of both pedals.

This post reminds me of one of my "dumbest moments"....I recently bought a new CC 3100 ...but there was still snow on the ground so it sat in the garage for two months until the grass started mowing. When the big day came to give the new tractor a try out....the first thing I noticed was...gee..this tractor really doesn't have much power...it hardly moves in reverse and forward top speed was acceptable, but I had my doubts whether I was going to be happy with what I thought was poor performance. I kept on mowing and thought...well, I will just have to deal with it unless it starts getting worst, in which case I will have to call the dealer and complain. It is possible CC intentionally reduced the reverse speed as a safety precaution....it made me want to go and run my old tractor instead.
I checked into this forum and noted several messages with complaints from CC owners who were having hydro problems..and I thought...oh great...I must have gotten a lemon.
Well, a few weeks went by and I had put on about 8 hours on the tractor mowing when one day I wanted to push the tractor out of the garage, but didn't want to start the engine because I was going to fill it with gasoline once it was out of the garage. I had never moved the tractor before without starting the engine and knew there was a release lever at the rear of the tractor which is used for the purpose of rolling the tractor without starting the engine....sooo...I found it and after reading the label near the lever, realized that the lever had been in the "disingage" position ever since I bought it. Once moved to the "engage" position I had all kinds of speed in both directions....DUH! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
