Sludge question

Thanks for all the advice. Am in the midst of doing my next oil change... this all said, I think I know where the sludge came from.

The engine sat for a long period of time prior to my purchase (like years) I don't think it was run hard when being rebuilt (not the engine ,but some hoses and pumps).

Anyway... Will know shortly what sort of fun I have on my hands.

If it sat for a long time after say 100 hrs of use on the oil, the soot suspended in the oil may have settled out. If it were me, I'd run a few short oil change intervals, or change at the seasons if you only put a few hours on per year, and keep an eye on it.

Also, if it had sat for years post-rebuild, you may have stirred up and cleaned out some oxidized oil from the first run. I wouldn't worry unless you keep seeing sludge.

atf is not a good cleaner contrary to popular belief there is better detergents in HDEO

I would like to hear more regarding this. I may have operated under a misconception that Dextron III had excellent detergent properties because I've used it for years to flush engines that had excessively dirty oil.:confused2:
