I have just gotten a 1972 Ford 3000 industrial backhoe it has a shuttle shift, when I first start it it takes about 5 minutes before it will move I have been told that the pickup filter is plugged, also told that it is in the bottom of the transmission, I have found no such filter, there are no tubes etc in the transmission, it is a four speed, that I can find I have not drained it completely. the only thing under the transmission is the drain plug. any one have any ideas??

I dont know anything about this particular machine but shuttles are usually gear sets, manually or hydraulic select (different clutches each gear) with hydraulic applied clutch for forward reverse. Maybe wrong fluid in it, 80/90 gear oil rather than hydraulic. My wrenching experience, gear oil has a different smell, unique stink so you should be able to smell on dipstick if you know the smell. Do other hydraulics operate well at cold start or are they dead too? Cold oil, low flow, maybe bypassing before anything can get to servo to apply the proper clutches.... Good Luck

Has proper oil in per the local tractor dealer everything else works ok, M&M classic tractor are the one that thing it may be the pickup filter which I can not find.

Note that the transmission and the power shuttle are two different things. The transmission will use gear oil, the shuttle will be another unit directly behind the engine. It should have a dip stick to check the oil level. It takes hyd. oil. It will have its own drain plug. While cold, pull the drain plug and check the oil. If it has water in it, the water will go to the bottom when cold. If the fluid is grey and has foam, drain and replace it.

No dip stick only drain plug is on bottom of trans. at a lost at this time, after it warms up it works fairly well but not like I think it should.

I am trying to find a parts diag. on that tractor. It appears that the power shutter and transmission may be one unit.

almost like the oil is too thick and has to get hot. It should be hyd. oil. I can not find a parts diag. on line. Is there any chance that they put the wrong oil in it? If you plan on keeping the tractor, it might pay to get a service manual. I still see some online.

found a manual on line but it only shows a 4 speed trans. says nothing about the shuttle. it has hydro oil in it. The only drain plug is under the trans with a fill check plug on the side, none under the shuttle, I was told by M&M classic tractor that they are one unit with a filter between the two on the bottom in the pickup line I can not find such a line or filter.

If when warm it operates OK then I wouldn't expect it to be a filter issue. Sounds to me like a viscosity issue. I have ZERO understanding of this tractor. How do the hydraulics (loader, 3pt etc.) operate when the trans is cranky?
