you only need to update the software IF you have employees. otherwise nothing really changes.

You need to renew the payroll subscription annually.

The complete package is $190 right now for 2012 Pro AND Enhanced Payroll for 3 employees at Sam's. If that fits his business, he should just look for that package every year. Renewal of the payroll subscription alone is $200, so getting it this way essentially updates the software for free.

Alan, I had to take a look again of where you lived:laughing: sound almost like my Accountant.:D

What my Accountant has done is for us, he made paper forms for us to fill out and/or has us print out various docs from QB, then he or his secretary type in what they need on their forms. I don't have full or par-time employees, but do sub out allot at times, so that may be a big reason.

BTW, I understand QB used allot of CPA and Accountant input to improve QB, since they became so much of the market?

Rather than providing any paper I just have my clients upload a QB backup file to our FTP site so I can pull whatever reports I need. There are other documents usually needed to do the work, but Quickbooks reports are not a part of that. I then make journal entries and recommend changes which I furnish back to the client. The beauty of QB Online is that I can call it up any time and any adjustments or edits I make are to the live data. The downside is that its a monthly fee - about $34 a month (about $53 a month with payroll) with our 20% discount. But no need to worry about backups or updates.

You would think that if a CPA recommends at least 10 new customers a year and maintains the old customers (who have to update periodically) then at least Intuit could furnish the CPA the software to work the client's data. Instead I pay $400 a year to be a pro advisor which licenses one computer. We have to then purchase licensing for every other computer in the office, every year. But they know now that since our clients have it, we have to have it too and so they squeeze us for the extra revenue.
